Current Player Metrics vs The Witch Queen

TWQ is often thought to be the peak of D2. Let's explore a few numbers- TWQ supported positive player numbers 7 out of 12 months of the year. TWQ saw a peak of 289k in February (launch) and a peak of 121k in December (close). TWQ ended in January with 12k fewer players on average (63k) than it opened with on average (75k). Overall, TWQ saw incredible retention and player returns at the start of every season. What made TWQ so magical and captivating for the playerbase? Why was the overall retention so high? Well here's my quick analysis behind the numbers. For starters was the advent of Light 3.0. The first 3 seasons saw overhauls to the subclasses, rejuvenating gameplay and buildcrafting. Gameplay diversity was near an alltime high, offering a multitude of flexible meta builds for Guardians to engage. The second reason? Content. Was it dripfed? Yes. Was it quality and extensive? Also yes. From the campaign to the season stories and arenas, TWQ perfectly encapsulated dripfeeding and weekly engagement. In relation to content comes the next position I'd like to discuss- Weapon Crafting. Weapon Crafting revamped and systemically reworked the foundation of Destiny 2. Player's not constantly fighting RNG was a huge win and incentive to stay. Even after they adjusted pattern progress collection via seasonal vendors, the game sustained consistent player numbers, suggesting that the grind isn't all that cracked out. These concepts were diluted and vacated as the series progressed. And while there were high points and notable seasons that followed in Lightfall and TFS, nothing ever recaptured the magic of TWQ. So the only question that remains is as follows: Can Bungie recapture the magic of TWQ? We've had spurts of greatness since. I don't believe they are incapable, but rather unwilling. Unwilling to dedicate the effort and time it took to develop such a masterpiece. https://steamcharts.com/app/1085660

  • Didn't they say they believed TWQ over-delivered? It feels so corporately rotten when business stifles creativity.

    • It all depends on the Higher Ups and money. Looks what's happening now - EA just laid off studios that made Battlefield 6. It seems like every week we are hearing projects cancelled and studios cut. We are in different times now and the Gaming Industry is probably wanting to incorporate more AI. Consoles are being restructured and may drop in 2 years, during a time when RAM is not so cheap. Bungie being silent on the Roadmap until June seems rather bleak. They could at least give us some news before Guardian Games.

    • Too late; the game is power crept to all hell. There is no going back without some large reset. Prior to prismatic, guns mattered. We are now in an era in which a single void lock nade clears entire rooms so guns aren't really even needed. There is no loot to chase b/c every weapon sucks compared to simply clearing a room with abilities.

        • And I honestly don't understand why they stopped the building of guns. I personally though it was a great idea.
