Destiny could benefit from larger open worlds with regional events like Diablo 4 Helltide
These events would provide players with a reason to actively explore and patrol these new larger open world regions. Some kind of regional event/s that cycle/s over the planet hourly, where each player can drive a meter that controls the activity of enemy engagement around them.
As players push their meter into higher tiers, larger more difficult enemies get called into battle until they are either overcome by the challenge or they fill their meter, in which case a large boss arrives. While each player is working on their own meter, players can combine forces creating a engaging multiplayer experience while out in the wild.
Reach higher tiers by killing enemies or bosses and completing patrols or public events in the active region. Rewards can be granted at stages during the activity and also for completion of the entire event. Depending on your performance reward quality can either be improved or worsened. These rewards could include crafting/enhancement materials, weapons or gear with higher tiers based on performance, and/or other ways to improve or upgrade gear.
This system could be combined with the new armor system that is currently in development to create more player driven experiences that contribute to player investment systems rather than the typical seasonal activity that must be played a thousand times over in the same arena or area that become stale in the first two weeks.
These larger open regions would obviously need quick ways to travel between them so keeping or expanding the landing zone style theme that already exists would help. The current in game map could be expanded to include regions that could then be clicked on to view sub regions in more detail.
Regional activities like this could also provide a random chance to get special legendary weapons that are normally only acquired through other means such as dungeons and raids.
TLDR: The small shared world space format that Destiny calls "planets" is getting stale. It would be nice to see large open worlds with big regional events that can provide a variable challenge to all skill levels, that can reward top tier loot and player investment resources based on each players performance. Events that grant agency for players create more player driven experiences.
Edited to append this here:
I think with the right execution Bungie could make some really fun regional content. With the rewards being tier based, locking in rewards when you reach a certain tier level during that instance of the regional event can make it so you can't lose progress once you reach a tier.
The other thing that I think would be great would be a way to upgrade items from the tier you earned, to higher tiers simply by achieving higher tiers in future instances of the events. There could be a currency that you can use to upgrade your lower tier items to higher tiers, that can be earned from increasing to higher tiers of the event. Such that when you finally get a random weapon or item from the event maybe it starts low but as you progress and get better at the game you can eventually tier it up to the max tier.
As an example, lets say someone reaches tier 2 during the event and happens to get lucky and receives a random reward of a Vex Mythoclast at tier 2. This player can then continue to play events and as they progress into higher tiers in the future, they can upgrade that Mythoclast up to the max tier over time through progression. Granted, the random unique rewards would be a much lower drop chance. So getting something like a Mythoclast or other unique exotic would already be rare in itself.
The idea here is that this kind of activity has no barrier to entry. It's solo friendly and group friendly. It rewards players based on their personal performance against different metrics such as damage taken, damage done, objectives contributed toward, enemies killed, bosses killed, and so forth. There could even be one metric for how many times the player was able to cycle his own meter during the event.
