I'm currently trying to get the Barrow Dyad catalyst. The quest wants you to do expert Nether using only a glaive or shotgun, and a sword, plus the Barrow Dyad itself. No way to stop overload champions with your weapons. It's infuriating but that's not the point.
My first attempt put me in the Trenchway. I did all the encounters fine and grabbed some decent boons, I even got two extra revive tokens, putting me at 11. I began the fight with the tormentor boss and destroyed all of the adds and started picking away at the boss's health. It's health is WAY too high and it hits way too hard. I took me over 45 minutes just to kill the boss, and I was down to 0 revives moving to the next area. Also, if you die while the grim healers are out, it will spawn you all the way across the map on the other side of the chasm, forcing you to run all the way back to the boss arena, while the boss heals. If the grim aren't out, you respawn in the boss arena with no issue.
The tormentor boss is far more difficult than any of the other 3 bosses in the Nether, regardless of difficulty, primarily just because it has what feels like 3x or 4x the total health, can heal, and cheeses you with spawn locations. I've experienced many bugs with this boss too, in the past. I'm glad the bug that caused you to fall through the map when it grabs you seems to be fixed. I've also had it where you can continually damage the boss but its life bar doesn't decrease at all. I hope that's fixed as well.
Bottom line is, 45+ minutes for a single boss encounter is ridiculous, especially with a restricted loadout, all to obtain a catalyst. Just let me run the Exotic mission on master difficulty instead. lol.

wasn't intentional when I found out, saw the quest step telling me the loadout choices HAD to use. equipped them and resigned the fact I couldn't do it alone so I went into the normal/advanced nether, upon completion at the final boss with loadout all the way through encounters the catalyst was rewarded. Didn't need to do expert. not sure if they patched this but I did it about 1 day after initial reset
-
Interesting. Good to know. I already completed the quest and got the catalyst, but I'm sure this will help other players.
-
Use whatever load out you want and swap to the required load out when the final boss is one shot. Easy! Did it last night, collected a lot of chests was probably 40 mins total.
-
That works? I assumed using other weapons would void the quest. Interesting.
That works? I assumed using other weapons would void the quest. Interesting.
Yes, this works 100%. It's what I did.

Yeah, the overload champs are a problem if you don't have something that can consistently apply slow and jolt/suppression is super inconsistent with OL stunning from my own experiences. I think the quest will progress so long as you restrict your loadkit. Teammates definitely make the experience worlds better.
-
Yeah, I was just trying to solo it real quick. I guess I'll have to wait until my fireteam gets on later tonight. It's still frustrating. I've been able to get most of my exotic catalysts solo. I wouldn't say expert Nether is hard, by any means, but it just takes so dang long.

Edited by eyerisgames: 3/28/2025 9:34:31 PMIt sucks because, at this point, I want to play the game, but there's literally nothing else that's going to be worth my time to do. This is an issue Bungie has never been able to solve. They either flood us with "chores" that we can't possibly hope to complete in a week (Red War through Shadowkeep era), or there's far too much downtime with nothing to gain (post Witch Queen era).
-
If you have cold steel on a sword, that can stun OLs, or a warlock with stasis turret. Ded Gramrye can also roll with voltshot. But yeah, really poor design choices from Bungo on that one. Rip, fam.
-
I have both, but I'm on titan. I'll just have to limit my loadout even further. lol. smh.
-
Bolt charge rally barricade. Problem solved.
-
It gets buggy later in the nether where it won't charge or getting near to max stacks ALL stacks then disappear, or you have to walk around the barricade to find the spot where it WILL charge the stacks the bolt charge
-
Yeah. Makes sense. Secant Filaments are super janky and buggy too. They don't apply devour on Empowering Rift cast and if the rift isn't cast on perfectly flat terrain it won't apply overload either. Very annoying.
-
Hmm. Bolt charge barricade wasn't working, but I used pulse grenades instead. The champion wasn't the biggest issue, it was the tormentor. In any case, I just got my catalyst. I ended up getting the Trenchway for the third area, stacked with boons, picked Ontological Limit right before fighting the boss. Idk how, but I thundercrashed into the tormentor's shoulders and it ohko'd him. I was like wtf? Lol. I was already in the Nether over an hour and I was dreading (pun not intended) another 45 minute fight. But, I won't look a gift horse in the mouth. I got the cat, so I'm happy.
