I never really understood why so many people said “getting into destiny 2 for new or returning players was god awful” until my buddy decided to get back into destiny 2. Me and him had played d1 since the release of dark below, he tried playing d2 around the time of the Osiris DLC but couldn’t fully get back into it. Fast forward to now and he decided to try it again. Now I know a lot of content is locked behind a pay wall but he wanted to get a feel for the game before spending money.
Holy crap is the new light atrocious. He was telling me he just didn’t know what he should be doing or even where to start. So I decided to make a second account and start fresh to kinda work it along with him. Now I’ve played d2 since the midnight release taking breaks here and there, but even I really didn’t even know what to do. You’re thrown in to the basic d1 beginning, given a couple missions to basically learn the game. And then you’re thrown to the wolves. You’re hud is loaded with multiple different quests which a lot now is the beginning of campaigns or seasonal content that you can’t even do after the first mission. And trying to figure out quests that are within other quests is nightmarish for new players.
There really needs to be a direct linear path for new players to play to atleast get them somewhat close to soft cap easily before moving on to the grind. The biggest downside is no longer have a base game story mode without buying dlc to do that. We can’t really expect to gain any new players at all if they can’t even figure out how/where to start nowadays.

that'd require bungie spending more money on this hog bungie treats this franchise like a loser currently because it isn't increasing year on year, regardless of whether it is still obscenely profitable it's with a maintenance team with an overall vision of stripmining the playerbase for cash they'll keep pushing the boundaries of what players will endure on monetization and gimmicks to increase grind time

Guardian, Archon Of LightArchon Priest Of House Light - old
If I was just hired as game director of D2 I would introduce the D1 main quest of finding and killing the black heart, with different starting points Humans would start in Cosmodrome, like current, and need to fight through the Devils to escape to the Tower, aided by Shaw Han Awoken would start in the DC, fighting through Taken,Hive and Scorn to get to the Tower, aided by Petra Exo would start in Europa, having to fight through Vex to get to the Tower, aided by Elsie All 3 origions will converge into the same quest once you get to the Tower Awoken will get exclusive dialogue when negotiating with Queen Mara and Uldren , Exo will get exclusive dialogue when talking to the Exo stranger -
2 RepliesThe new light experience ends in another season think it'll be fine as is does it suck massively but if your just now getting into the game you've wasted your own time.

Destiny 2 as a whole needs an overhaul lol

What new lights need is The Red War but given that the rocket scientists at Bungle chose to delete that from their backups that's never going to happen.

Edited by Zodleon: 3/18/2025 2:47:40 AMYes, player on boarding needed to be better. Years ago. I'm still baffled at how a company can almost entirely disregard the most important part of growing as a business, new customers. Raid was probably trash, idk I never played it, but they weren't spending that much money on advertising to get new players because it was good PR.

2 RepliesHonestly, what's the point.? The games been around long enough that anyone can look up a Utube vid to see where it's at. You don't have to actually play it to know if you'll like it if not. I'm guessing that's another reason why it can't get new people in. If you're jumping blindly in you most likely ain't going to stay anyway.

1 ReplyIt doesn't help that the NPCs refer to events that happened to the player, that are no longer in the game for the player to experience. This has got to be the most alienating game for new players.

Need to at least put more work into memory missions. Put in some more story to teach players what is really going on. Also ease them into the controls and such further with the subclass.

It's an awful experience for new players and also seasoned vets. I got sick of having to do mind numbing story missions on 3 characters, so I decided to have 2 Hunters, one dedicated to PvE and one dedicated to PvP, no need to switch gear or mods anymore, and only need to do the boring story/campaign to unlock PvE stuff for one character. Anyway, making a new hunter and being bombarded with old annoying missions was confusing to me as someone who has played since the beginning. It was confusing trying to figure out where I needed to go half the time just to unlock all my subclasses again. (which I was prepared to do) but the game explains it all so very poorly.

Since a lot of the old stuff story-wise isn't available anymore, maybe a cool idea to update the new light experience would be to bring them in as a part of the new era. Ghosts would still be out there looking for more future Guardians. So maybe just the new light initial mission, and then you get to the tower. You get a GOOD loot drop full of armor and weapons, provided by Guardians that came before you, and stockpiled in the tower. Make old missions playable through the timeline on the menu (update as continued expansions come out), but otherwise make new lights start in the current timeline without the feeling you missed out on so much. Remove old requirements and flashing icons from older stuff- it's a novelty at this point anyway.

Yup and this is a AAA studio, onboarding new players is supposed to be integral to sustaining a live service game. So want the game to wither and die.

I brought two friends into D2 which both lasted a week maybe? Buildcrafting crushed them both... Between the classes, the weapon perk pairing(s), exotics - armor included. Then the mods, and artifact mod?! (anything else I'm missing) Thankfully, pre-tonics but still... they essentially said you either have to be a legacy player, or have a degree in this game. I hate to agree but man - it's overwhelming to say the least to build any sort of decent character in this current sandbox. I know after any sort of break - i always have to check youtube for the current season to see what's working well before fine tuning something i like... I am not sure how anyone who's never played before can successfully navigate this buildcrafting "out of the box"... I know i have at least a loadout for each class, another for my eager edge, etc... then the itemized leveling system messing up their builds - but wait materials... etc... it just snowballs into advanced a little too quickly IMO..

FWIW: this old tortoise thinks the following things should be provided for New Lights / Lapsed Lights… 1. Movement Basics - climb (mantle) / crouch / run / jump / slide 2. Weapon Basics - how to aim and shoot all weapon types 3. Short Obstacle / Weapons Course - to practice all of the a/m 4. Different Game Modes - PvP / PvP explained 5. Training PvE - Public Events and how to make the different ones Heroic / Lost Sector - normal mode to practice / Strikes / Quests / Gambit 6. Training PvP - game modes explained 7. LFG or FTF - how to use 8. First Steps - complete a Lost Sector / QP Control match / Gambit match. Could also introduce a NL / LL emblem and a class item, which is affixed 1x week / month - so everyone else can help out, if needed. Could also effect a pulsating green / amber / red glow - in case they need some help (Amber / red) or not (green) Once all boxes ticked, everyone should be up to speed…then go play, as desired…or not. If so, exit via the gift shop…if not, just exit. That is all. Ease Springs! 🫡 MDGA

3 RepliesIts been like it for years now I tried it myself on an alt account and I can see how newer players would be lost hopefully bungie fixes it. Maybe make shadowkeep free so they actually have something.
