I truly wish Destiny had a real competitive mode that utilized a mix of elo rating and skill rating alongside rank to match teams.
Instead, we have a mix of lobby balance, sbmm, and rank which leads to games being horribly unbalanced and punishes casual players more than anyone else.
I will get max rank this season, I do every season, but I am an outlier. If you’re not a top 0.1% player then launching a game of competitive is the most miserable experience currently in pvp, and even for me it’s unenjoyable at best.
There is ZERO reason a silver or gold player should be matched with or against me in a lobby filled with four or five 2.0+ kd players all in platinum or higher rank. That is going to be a miserable experience for that player and is going to be a miserable experience for the teammates of the team they get placed on
Lobby balancing has no place in any competitive game modes. Period.
Points earnings should be clear and based on performance alongside win or loss. When the majority of the player base is getting put into lobbies they don’t belong in, get bad teammates or feel like they have zero impact on their games the competitive playlist starts to feel more like spinning a wheel for a random outcome rather than having agency. If you are not a very high skilled top player you are rolling the dice that is stacked against you.
Of course, I will admit, not everyone deserves to be every rank BUT it’s better to be in silver and KNOW that you belong in silver because of your skill level that is entirely in your control, rather than be in silver and feel like the only reason your silver and your friend is gold is because they rolled the dice better than you.
Make the competitive playlist a true and real competitive experience, the same that’s offered in other games, not this mix of a half casual playlist with some competitive aspects that tries to please everyone and in turn pleases no one.

I honestly liked how competitive was before when nobody lost rank until after they hit fabled. Honestly why lose rank anyway? Why not lose points but once you hit a rank, you’re in that rank? What’s waiting at the top rank anyway? It can’t be a weapon. The reason why I played competitive was to just get to fabled, grab the seasonal weapon and bounce. Anything after fabled was the higher tier players game. Seriously though this new game mode doesn’t seem any better. I don’t even like having to do the placement matches every week just to be able to focus more of the weapons. That’s just me. I still do it from time to time but not all the time. I play PvP for a short amount of time before it gets frustrating.

1 ReplyThe modes are awful and the rewards are trash too. The rank system funnily enough is the smallest issue and they continue to target it as the problem despite not being the problem a year ago: they made it into a problem with their recent changes. The validity of the rank system only exists if there are enough players playing to prevent average players from randomly being forced into an Ascendent lobby. Bungie refuses to let people grind the weapons, refuses to let people get good artifice armor at any reasonable rate, and just hands out a near god roll of the weapon after your first 7 games. Not to mention how instant and infinite revives allow for essentially uncounterable snowballs: the disadvantaged team has to cleanly wipe the enemy’s entire team all at once in a short time while the advantaged team can just slowly whittle away at the enemy and spam revives whenever someone is down. The spawns are awful, especially on zones, where the place you spawn can literally alter the outcome of the entire match. It’s no wonder no one is playing this playlist. -Frustrating rank system -Horrible rewards -Poorly designed gamemodes

1 ReplyEvery point is 100% spot on. Unfortunately, Bungo doesn’t take pvp seriously. Yet, they have the balls to create a pvp game (Marathon). Long gone are the devs that made Halo, we haven’t had a solid pvp experience in a long time. Destiny could have been an insanely competitive esports game if Bungie had the foresight to see how popular the pvp mode would become, and subsequently divert funding and real talent onto a pvp dev team.
-
Spot on, I refuse to believe someone who actually plays or cares about Comp designed it to be the way that it is currently. The scoring system is laughable.
-
There is no skill anymore. I rarely duels anyone. It's all ability spam non-stop stop, freezing players so they can't move for an easy kills. Pull out a sidearm or smg, and your insta killed by shotguns or fusion. Players only want to use the strongest easiest to use weapons and op builds. This makes pvp stale and boring.

Thank you. Thank you for being one of the “top” players and openly speaking the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth so help you god. Every point hit like a Mac truck on a lost deer (sorry Bambi). I really hope your words reach far in Bungie’s ear but I don’t hold high hopes. Man if you were a ball player this be the slam dunk of the night. Again; thank you for a real post coming from the rare top player base.
-
1 ReplyThe scoring system is probably one of the most asinine systems I’ve ever seen in a video game. I also still don’t think it’s functioning the way they mentioned, unless I missed something. I just lost a match where I had 27 defeats, 3.0 efficiency, and lost almost a hundred points. Both teammates went negative. Feels bad.
-
Agreed… I would also add that survival was a much better game mode for comp.
-
Someone in Bungie gets kick backs from gaming sherpa business
-
Thank you for posting this. Seriously. It's rare to see someone who plays at the higher skill bracket say what you did. Every time I played comp, I'd be placed in gold. Most matches felt like I was cannon fodder. Barely felt I was matching gold players. I really hope this post makes it to Bungie's end so they can start to actually fix things. Thank you once again.
-
This is a well reasoned post, thanks for your insights! This mode was at its best when they made it Survival only (and on the old special ammo system). The imbalances, while frustrating, were also part of its charm.
-
Bungie still doesn't know what the identity is and who to cater to. They want to constantly make everyone happy, especially the casual audience.
-
Edited by Kirka: 3/6/2025 10:31:51 PMImo Competitive should be solely rank based and Trials card based. That would (maybe??) stop the constant stupid whining about teammates. Sadly the playerbase isn't big enough anymore for that to work.
-
1 ReplyI can't stand comp. Yes, Redrix is an easy gun, but it doesn't make you a better player. There are players who have Redrix and are -blam!- at PvP. Yesterday I had a guy I reported for griefing the match because all they wanted to do was run around and emote just to make it through their 3 matches for the gun. They had 0 kills. I can't rank up if the team doesn't play to win.
-
What’s worse is back-of-the-map Harry’s laning with pulses in clash. Boring
-
Match un balanced , fireteam vs solos , laggy game, some time players just purchase the game , and all that stuff you need to wait 1 hour to play just single match. What a disappointment when i look at the game where it’s arrived :)

Edited by ZayOsiris Gaming: 3/7/2025 4:01:01 PMEven if bungie balanced the matchmaking system, you’d still be faced with the meta — which isn’t often based around gun skill, team composition, or gun skill. Games are won with cheese. Things that internally spike out through meta shifts, or unintentional power crept abilities. Bungie definitely has some catching up to do
-
I usually don’t complain about PVP, but this whole meta is garbage right now. They really did improve Trials, but everything else is sht.
-
1 ReplyThey could load everyone with the same weapons, armor and build. That's balance, not one team in Ferraris against three players in Ford Escorts - with flat tires. People don't really want balance. They want to win by being over-powered compared to the other team.
-
4 RepliesShould honestly just remove competitive. It’s garbage and not populated on PC. If they aren’t going to do any sandbox tuning, just get rid of it.
-
The only way there would be an actual competitive mode is if it was guns only. Zero abilities.
-
Makes total sense when you understand that D2’s MM, in all modes is about engagement, not competition or fairness.
-
Oh bro bungie doesn’t give 2 sheets about PVP balance or even PVP in general. 10 Years and the only real “competitive” mode we have is trials of Osiris…. Which was in Destiny 1…. Year 1….. 10 years baby!!
-
Question I am Gold III is that what? Low tier?
-
Why? This isn’t a serious pvp game.
-
Done every single one of the emblems and I think the modes dog sh*t and should be removed. When it takes 25 minutes to find a match at peak times during the first act.. the mode shouldn’t still be a thing.
