I prefer to be ground support for a big mech dude. It feels like having a big strong friend to help! Maybe he lets me ride on his shoulder to cover a distance quicker. And maybe we have special little names to call each other.
It’s kinda comforting, especially in a single player game, to have a big guy friend. Or even a little guy pal.
That’s the reason I’ve always loved Ghost in Destiny. I generally play alone but I can make silly comments to my Ghostie(as I call him). I guess I just enjoy the kind of false companionship it gives. The feeling of having a buddy but not the drainage of socializing. I loved BD-1 in Star Wars:Jedi Fallen Order for the same reasons. Maybe that’s just me tho
sorry for rambling but you made the mistake of asking for my thoughts :p
Interesting. The question arose as someone asked me about an RP campaign I had an idea for, and when I mentioned the big mech (which was originally stated as a "You control a big mech for these boss fights") they said they'd rather be on the ground pulling an assist. It is worth noting, however, regardless of your answer, you do have a sidekick. Normally, it's both of you on the ground, but during these boss fights you would either both hop into a mech, or only your sidekick hops into the mech, and you handle stuff on the ground. Does the presence of a sidekick either way change your opinion at all, or would you still rather be on the ground?
No need to apologize, hearing people's ramblings is exactly what I'm looking for.
Edited by CallMeEmilz: 3/2/2025 5:01:54 AMDepends. Is the sidekick like another person or just a lil dude? Bc having the sidekick be another human(or whatever species) is less enticing. Although if written correctly, can be almost as enjoyable as a little dude sidekick. Ah, yes. It’s kinda like the difference between hanging out with a good friend and your cat. You love them both, but they offer different comfort and aid. A friend is more sentient comfort. A more complex, in depth relationship. Whereas being with your cat relies more on the unspoken care and bond developed through action. I’ll also use the example again of BD-1. He doesn’t speak, only chirps and whistles, as droids do. But through his physical language and an understanding you gain through those little chirps and whistles, you gain a love for your little friend. He provides some small aid in opening some doors, but it isn’t much. However it’s still enough for me to go “Thanks BDDDDD!!” Every time he does it. I think it’s also worth noting that bitty things make me happy. If it’s small and friendly I’m guaranteed to go :D Edit: I realized I so never actually answered your question! I’d rather still play support on the ground, regardless of sidekicks :p

Oh, yeah, the sidekick's another person. But, also, like, the mech suit is being driven by them, so the mech suit's a person, too. That said, the premise of the RP actually involves having a Familiar, so you still get a little buddy in addition to the NPC sidekick. You design the Familiar yourself, though, so whatever personality it has would be up to you as well. Some Familiars can talk, but others can't, so whether or not your little buddy was able to talk would be something you could decide. The Familiars are besides the point, though. I'm mostly just wondering about the mech. :p So, with all the additional information, is your answer still the same? You'd rather provide the mech with some ground support, instead of controlling it for the boss fight?
As a side note, there's no guarantees I'll actually be putting it up, but if I do make this RP a thing, you're free to join, as long as you have a Discord.
Yes. With all the given information, I would still prefer to be ground support. Especially if my sidekick is piloting! I can be the sidekick now! :D

Very well, you are sidekick now! :D

Yippeee!! I usually main healing so I’m used to sidekicking lol
-
It depemds on the game, but in FFXIV at least, I’ve found Healers aren’t the sidekicks at all. They’re the ones kind of in charge, if only implicitly. :p

The game I play the most that main healing in is Dauntless. So my catchphrase is “STOP REZZING YOURSELF I WILL GET YOU JUST GIVE ME FIVE SECONDS” bc I play with stubborn men! 😀 They’re tanks so who am I to boss them around 😑. Mhm, yeah but then they run out of revives and start sounding a lot different lol

Haha, in FFXIV, there are no self-revives. For the most part, the Healer is going to be the only that can rez anyone (though a couple DPS classes have a Raise as well), so that's not a problem. FFXIV being an MMO, most dungeons are literally impossible without a Healer (or at least, very, very difficult, I'm sure there are some people who manage), and a Tank who doesn't play to their Healer's skill level will find themselves dead in a heartbeat. So, even though the Tank is technically the boss, the Healer is the one really in charge. If a Healer says to slow down, then the Tank has the choice of either slowing down, or dying.
