• Dear, This Dude Who Is Kind of Jus Doing Whatever, If you don't know who you are, I would recommend you go on a journey of self-discovery, but I'm going to save you the trouble and tell you you're most likely a DPS, because if you were a Tank or a Healer and didn't know your job, your entire team would probably be dead. Signed, The Healer Who is Probably Carrying You
If you actually want to know how to tell the difference, you can usually tell by asking a simple question: "What is my primary job/focus/goal in a fight?" If the answer is "dealing damage to the enemy/boss", then you're probably DPS. If the answer is "keep my allies from taking as much damage as possible", then you're probably a Tank. If the answer is "help my allies recover from their wounds", then you're probably a Healer. There are exceptions, of course. In FFXIV, some Healers don't actually recover wounds, but give their allies shields to prevent them from taking damage in the first place, which is arguably a very Tank thing to do, but they're considered Healers. But for the most part, it's pretty clear cut.
• Dear, The Balanced, Chances are, you're either still DPS and just don't realize it, or you're not actually playing a class-focused game to begin with. Signed, The Healer
A lot of games have classes--either rigid or fluid--but aren't really what you'd call "class focused". A class focused game is a game where the game expects (and usually forces) you to go into any given scenario with dedicated roles for Tanking, Healing, and DPS, and if you don't go in with those roles, then you're simply not going to be able to survive. Take FFXIV for instance. In FFXIV, most enemy attacks simply cannot be avoided. Like, period. No ifs, ands, or buts. This fact makes the Healer and Tank roles required in most cases where enemies are sufficiently powerful, because without a Tank the damage will be getting spread around easily, and AoE healing is harder than single target healing, and without a Healer you'll simply be taking too much damage, and you'll just die. Besides that, you can't really make a "hybrid Tank" class, not really, because the whole point of a Tank in the first place is to keep you from getting hit. If you're taking the damage that the Tank should be taking for you, then the Tank is failing their job, and the Healer's job is harder than normal. You can have a hybrid DPS/Healer class, but in a class focused game you really need that Healer to have healing to be their top priority, so these hybrid classes are still usually primarily DPS, but with the ability to help out with healing in a pinch. But, like, say you're playing Dark Souls. There are still classes here, Cleric is the Healer, Sorcerer is the DPS, and the melee character with the big Greatshield is the Tank, and you could easily make a blanced class, who knows a bit of all three. Buuuut though the classes exist, it's most certainly not a class focused game, because anyone on this team could still clear the boss without any help, and the game has no systems in place to make sure you're matched with the other classes.
