If you're expecting holiday events to be something special, then you should not be playing a live service game. Destiny is not the only game that monetizes holiday events. Grand Theft Auto, Fortnite, and Master Duel all try to indice the players into spending money on limited timed cosmetics. The only game I can think of that doesn't handle holiday events this way is Animal Crossing.

Fortnite actually has free gifts with the several days long winterfest cabine. Skins, backblings, contrails etc. what you would expect from christmas. That's stuff they could easily sell for way over 20$or 30$. Destiny gifts you nothing but a slap in the face. Live service or not, it depends on how you treat the playerbase with that seasonal event. Shop items are always present, not just on events, so the monetizing factor is not really relevant when it comes to a specific event. If the event or specific thing is nicely done then players will mostly eat it up, as always. But if it sucks, like The Dawning, year after year, then Bungie gets what they deserve.

Holiday events ARE supposed to be something special? Da fuc'? Not a huge grind like this one was. Or monetized as much. Even Fortnite lets players open presents every day with ZERO grind with their event. Cut it out. And telling someone NOT to play a live service game because you deem it so? Smh.
