I wish I liked Enter the Gungeon more than I did. I used to play it quite a bit. I believe I actually bought everything in the shop.
But, like, the fact that (almost) every chest needs a key unironically ruined the game for me. The fun part about Enter the Gungeon, in my opinion at least, was using all the wacky guns, but since every chest was locked, you actually weren't guaranteed to get a new gun every stage. While not a problem in it of itself, when you then combine that with the limited ammo, the most effective strategy becomes using the default gun for as long as you can, undermining the main draw of the game in the first place.
This goes double if you want to take on the secret floors, which usually require extra keys to get to.
It totally sucks, because there's so much to love about the game. I love the enemy variety, and the level design, the guns were all really fun, and, like, I kind of genuinely enjoyed the lore, for as silly as it was. I beat the Dragun a few times, but I never wound up completing the past sections. I just got really annoyed with the game's lack of loot.
If the game's chests were unlocked by default, it would probably be one of my favorite Roguelikes, but alas.
Oh, but as far as the characters are concerned, I'll admit I didn't play most of them very much, but I liked the space marine dude and the robot. The robot had the better default gun, but the space marine dude could, like, heal, which was a pretty big deal. :p
Honestly, I never found keys to a big deal as there was so any wants around them or ats to get different loot from diffrent ways. And plus a gun is guaranteed every floor
A gun is guaranteed every floor in a chest.
That’s the problem. You don’t get a gun every floor unless you have a key to spare every floor. Same with the passive buffs.
The keys didn’t bother me at first, but as I kept playing the game, it just grew so tedious. I could realistically go through an entire floor with no new loot, because I either never got a key, or I wanted to save the key for the secret floors.
I found myself always wanting to go play Risk of Rain 2, or One Step From Eden, or Dead Cells instead, because completing a run in those games felt so much more consistent, because getting new weapons/abilities was more consistent.
In RoR2 loot is locked behind money, and all you have to do is fight monsters.
In OSFE, you get a new card after every fight.
In Dead Cells, you’re guaranteed one free chest every level.
They all just felt a lot nicer to play.
Being forced into playing a specific character because of a not-great loot system isn't really a plus.
I don't remember being able to buy keys at the start, but assuming it uses the green monies, whatever it was called, I kinda hate those kinds of systems in Roguelikes. I should be able to start a fresh run with no modifiers and do just fine.
