Belos I would throw under the category of irredeemable villains. A lot of villains get a chance at a redemption arc and some of them make good use of it. Like Gideon form Gravity Falls or the Ice King from Adventure Time. But then there's the ones that are given multiple opportunities to do some good and they choose evil every time. Belos is one but even with that we still didn't think he was the most evil one we had seen. The Lich King from Adventure Time is pure evil, like Aku from Samurai Jack so they follow generic tropes. Same with Bill from Gravity Falls. And there's the occasional person like the Nowhere King from Centaurworld who is turned evil through an unfortunate series of events.
But the worst of the worst, the most truly despicable villain is Emilia from Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts. Since you haven't seen it I don't want to spoil it, so I won't go into detail about her various antics. I'll say we cheered when she got her deserving punishment. The only other time we did that was when Simon from Infinity Train got his comeuppance, but he wasn't nearly as major a character in the show as Emilia was in Kipo

I haven’t seen Samurai Jack, and I never finished Adventure Time, so I can’t comment on those two, but at least as far as Bill is concerned, I’d consider Belos to be the more evil of the two. Bill is evil, for sure, and if you stuck him side by side with Belos and compared the amount of destruction they caused, Bill definitely wins. But, the thing with Bill, is even though he’s totally evil, he’s going to tell you that to your face. If Bill was going to destroy the Boiling Isles, he’d do it by just straight up killing everyone. But the reason Belos is so much worse is because of how he got the people of the Boiling Isles to think that the sigils were a good thing. People were happy to get their sigils—excited even. It’s horrible. If Bill were to give you a cup of poison, he’d tell you straight up that it’s poison. If Belos were to do the same, he’d tell you it’s some sort of healing elixir. In my mind, this is what makes Belos the more evil of the two. Like, if you’re going to murder me, just tell me to my face, man. I do definitely plan to watch that, probably pretty soon, too! As for Simon, he was the baddie in Season 3, yeah? I actually felt really bad for him. What he did was totally wrong, but I do think he was ultimately a good person. He was just scared of losing the person he loved, and worldview got shattered at the same time. It was just an unfortunate series of events that pushed him over the edge. If things happened more gradually, and they were given time to properly process things, I think he would’ve come around, honestly.

I suppose Simon was really just a kid and would have come around, or maybe had an adult been there it would have turned out different. I should also throw out Ozai as another candidate for evil villain of the millennium. Poisoning his own father, manipulating his wife to marry him, being a -blam!- to his kid, world domination, typical villain attributes. And I don't think he ever comes around. He thinks he's right all the time

Edited by The First Aifos: 7/28/2024 1:52:35 AMYeah, Simon was definitely in the wrong, he definitely took things too far, but I mean, aside from Grace, he was genuinely alone, and she was slowly pushing him away. Especially given he already had a fear of abandonment to some extent after what happened with The Cat, he must've been terrified. And when you have that much fear inside of you, it can make you do really awful things. Pile that on top of the fact that they were in a super stressful situation, and it's not really any wonder he lashed out. And, obviously, killing Tuba especially was an absolutely terrible thing to do, but he didn't think the denizens of the Train were really alive. Even Grace was still coming to terms with that fact--and she only really seemed to fully accept it after Hazel turned out to be a denizen too. I really didn't like Season 3. I kept hoping things would get better--I was hoping this was a story of how someone made a huge mistake, because of fear and pain, but ultimately through forgiveness and working to be better, things would still work out in the end. But, it wasn't. It was the story of someone who was hurt and afraid, and how that fear and pain ruined their life. Forever. Simon was 100% in the wrong, obviously, but it still broke my heart what happened to him. Ah, but yes, Ozai. He's definitely in the running for the worst of the worst! Abusive, manipulative, little care of life, he checks all the boxes! I'd still personally rank Belos as a little bit worse, though. Belos isn't a dad, so we don't know how he'd treat his kids, but given how he treated his own brother, it probably wouldn't have been great. And while Ozai was definitely pioneering a devastating war, that cost countless lives, at least he was pretty up front about the whole "I'm going to kill you" thing. It's kind of like, imagine if how Ozai treated his family was how he treated the entire world, and that's basically Belos!
