About the timer, instead of the fight being over once the clock runs out, what if it was something like the abilities get weaker or mana regeneration (cooldowns) slows/stops or something like that.
Could be due to something like, uh the magic needs recharging, or the robots have a “power” vacuum (which could fit with the theme) that saps player mana/magic capabilities.
*Or the faeries leave somehow. Loss of power, captured, bored, hungry, swayed by the boss’ magnetic personality?
This way, the player(s) is still punished by the timer, but still has a chance to possibly salvage it with, I guess basic spells and no faeries or something.
Deteriorating rewards?
(Over time end rewards could be more damaged/lower quality [like from intact stuff to random scrap] due to the prolonged fighting and destruction. maybe even still having that rare chance of high quality stuff, just heavily decreased chances.)

Or the boss gets juiced up, but a lightning fast one-shoting bullet sponge that regenerates would probably feel a little scummy.
Maybe something subtle.
The boss just leaves? (Or shakes the wizards off) (or self destructs)
Maybe a combo? Boss leaves after a second, much shorter timer?

Yeah, the more I thought about it, the less confident I was feeling about having a fail-timer. Degrading rewards was basically what I wound up with as my conclusion. I'm thinking you'll be ranked on each mission (Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze), and higher ranks net you better rewards. Crucially, though, each tier also rewards you with the lower tier rewards, too. So, for example, getting a Platinum Rank would mean you get a roll for the Platinum drop, the Gold drop, the Silver drop, and he Bronze drop. I have to say, though, narratively I love the idea of the faeries just bailing on you after a certain time. Like "You only paid for 5 minutes, buddy! We're outta here!". Mechanically, however, it feels a little cruel, doesn't it? Like, if someone's taking a while on a boss, they're probably having a hard time. Making them even weaker after a bit seems mean. :p Aside from the ranks, each boss will probably have a mission that involves beating them in a certain time. Sometimes this will be indirect ("Get Gold Rank or higher on this quest!"), other times it may be a specific time. Ideally, this means that instead of feeling like you're punished for taking too long, you feel rewarded for being fast. I was also thinking, there will probably be an option in the menu to turn a timer on or off. It won't affect gameplay, but it'll show you your current rank, and how fast you need to be before the rank goes down. There may even be an option for ticking up vs ticking down.
