I think if you have steampunk mages, then one should be about steam powers

Considering steam is just really hot water, it seems a little silly to have one class be "the elementalist" with several different elements under his belt, and then the other one be "water". :p

or just use steam as mana idk i didn’t read the post lol

Haha, abilities are on cooldowns, so there is no mana. :p

Edited by f3: 5/11/2024 8:32:09 PMIf you really wanted to lean into the steam aspect of steampunk, I think it would be neat if the abilities were actually steam powered, & the reason they’ve got cooldowns is cuz you have to heat up more water. I think it just depends on whether you’re trying to merge the steampunk & fantasy genres or have them in conflict. Either way works and would be cool, but I think I’m still unclear whether they’re actually steampunk mages or mages that happen to exist in a steampunk setting.

I love that idea theoretically, but I can't imagine how a group of mages would carry around enough water for that to actually be implemented. They'd all have to be carrying massive water tanks with them everywhere. :p I guess atm I kind of have them more as mages in a steampunk setting rather than the mages being steampunk themselves. The technology in the world is steampunk, but the mages are using magic not technology.
The technology in the world is steampunk, but the mages are using magic not technology.
Regardless of how you approach it—merging the magic and steampunk-ness or having each starkly contrast the other—I think you could get a lot out of really exploring how those genres interact. Because, again, either way is cool lol. But if it’s just set dressing, it feels like the game would be missing the opportunity to be something really unique and fun.

Hm.. You know, I think I'll consider it! Giving all the characters some sort of storage tank! I'd only need 4 or 5 designs after all, I could probably make it work (especially if I hire a character designer!). :D That said, I think it may also be fun to be a sort of "magic is dying" world. Like, the whole premise is mages fighting BIG ROBOTS, so it could be a world where technology is slowly phasing out tech. Having them be at odds could be fun, too. Though either way, I suppose, the intention is more of an arcade-like game, so story will probably be light.

Yeah but steam can fry the electricals and the metals
