Move around, pick up fish, go to your menu from time to time. The game's AFK system doesn't register pressing a button over and over as activity.

Too many fish lying on the ground can trigger an error code as well. As suggested, you don't have to pick up every one, but a few from time to time helps.

didn't actually know that since so many channels recommend just leaving them on the ground entirely thank you for the help

Its the same things that forced them to change how laurels dropped in Guardian Games (before they were just outright removed this past event) Too many items on the ground causes Guitar errors. So like, ammo, motes, subclass pickups, laurels, orbs of power, fish...too many makes the game explode.

Sure thing. I've heard that some streamers have suggested that, but others have actually tested things and found that it only increases the next event's meter by a small margin, not really enough to risk losing any fish you've already pulled from the pond. Good luck to you!
