This and that. So many years. Everyone fighting on this one point. “The Witness isn’t the Winnower. The Winnower is the Darkness, the Witness is a voice in the darkness.” Or the other side, saying the Witness was the Winnower. Honestly, no one really knew up until this point. But this cutscene proves it. Finally. The Witness is a culmination of a civilization that worshipped and was blessed by the light. But they came to worship the Winnower in order to gain meaning. They learned of the darkness from the veil. And they became the Witness.
One thing though. It took this long to tell us this? I would’ve loved for this question to have been answered long ago. It was one of the really important questions.

3 RepliesYou're damn right he's not. I'm actually the winnower and that's why I've devoted my life to sowing discord.

Edited by Jkilzer: 6/22/2023 6:52:55 PMThe witness is the result of tampering. Thats all the light and darkness saga is about. The traveler broke the first rule by giving the light to them, the darkness, naturally is going to react to balance it out. The problem is that these two entities are not intelligent. They are catalyst for their divine purpose: creation and formation. The witness is just the first victim of this dance of light and dark. The reason they are more on the side of darkness is because they are the embodiment of the darkness' reaction to traveler giving them the light. The witness is the first knife.

13 RepliesEdited by Mareep: 6/21/2023 4:55:39 AMI gotta disagree. The cutscene made it sound like the Gardener and Winnower are both part of a mythology that the Witness's original species came up with. The Gardener is literally Traveler, but there wasn't really a Winnower. The way they talked about the universe it was made to sound chaotic and without a Winnower. So the species merged to become what they believed to be the "Winnower". In order to bring order to the universe they became a being that would give the universe meaning.

1 ReplyIt's official. At this point I don't care. And I suspect many others don't either.
