You get bullied, you stand up, especially if your cause is just. And even more so if it targets someone else. That’s what I was taught.

Unfortunately in your case all you can do is leave. So there's no real standing up to that person. The most likely outcome of your message was increased harassment. That person is more of a troll than a bully.
