Network Restriction with consistently stable, fast connection

I'm looking for guidance from the community. I received a 2 week PVP restriction yesterday due to "consistently unstable Internet connection that is negatively affecting other players." I have appealed, but as expected, the restriction wasn't overturned. I understand and appreciate the intent behind a restriction like this. However, my connection is extremely stable and consistent. I play on a PC hard-wired to a gigabit fiber connection in a major metropolitan area. I'm not playing over wi-fi, so there's really no risk of in-home instability. My connection has plenty of bandwidth and at most I have a couple other devices connected at any given time. I typically see pings of 5-8ms in most games that run on AWS because I live near the US-east AWS data centers. Aside from some recent server stability issues (acknowledged on Bungie's help twitter), I haven't had any lagging or disconnects from games. Furthermore, in the few weeks that I have been back to Destiny 2, I haven't played very much crucible (really only grabbing my pinnacles and the odd match here or there). I know that sometimes these issues won't be immediately visible to me, and would only be visible to other players, but my friends that I have played with haven't noticed any rubber-banding or anything to indicate that I have a bad connection. Additionally, I received no warning or forward indication that I was causing a problem, so it feels bad to suddenly and inexplicably be restricted for 2 weeks. My NAT type is Open, and I really can't fathom why I received this suspension. I don't run a VPN or any other network-impacting software on my computer. I'm really bummed to be missing my first Iron Banner since returning to D2, and I just want to do whatever is possible to make sure that this doesn't happen again (but that's difficult, because I have no indication of what is wrong). If anyone knows more about the reasons I would receive a restriction like this, or things I could try to improve it to avoid it happening again, I'd be really grateful.

  • Dropping a reply here in case anyone comes across this in the future. I finally discovered the root cause and was able to resolve it (though I am still on a 2 month restriction, so I'm currently praying that it is truly resolved and unfortunately have no way to confirm - but I'm pretty confident given the information I have). In my research, I finally discovered this reddit post: https://www.reddit.com/r/destiny2/comments/mshgz8/2000_hours_and_i_just_learned_this_white_bar/ I legitimately didn't realize this was a connection quality indicator. (I thought it was voice chat volume, but never use in-game voice chat). As it turns out, my indicator was representing that, for some reason, Destiny was viewing my connection as unstable or inconsistent. It would stay low, or if observed for long periods of time, sometimes bounce up to about half-full and then back to low. Screenshots here: Most of the time it would be here: https://i.imgur.com/QRO8fir.png And rarely it would jump to half full: https://i.imgur.com/3aZoyCI.png Making this discovery was fantastic for me. It gave me a way to reliably debug the issue. The challenge was that I never experienced anything that would suggest my connection was actually bad, but something about my connection definitely looked bad to Destiny. So, I got to work trying different connections - I plugged my computer straight into the Verizon ONT and saw that I had a consistent, full white bar on the connection indicator - which showed me that it was something in my network. My router is a relatively high end Asus mesh setup: https://www.asus.com/Networking-IoT-Servers/Whole-Home-Mesh-WiFi-System/ZenWiFi-WiFi-Systems/ASUS-ZenWiFi-AX-XT8/, so I was frustrated to learn that ultimately the router was the root cause. I went through every network setting in the book, trying uPNP, port forwarding, varying NAT configurations but nothing, when plugged into or wirelessly connected to that router, would abate the issue. Finally, I bought another router and set up a new network in my home, and the issue is now resolved. My white bar is consistently full now in every activity that I have access to.

Well, unfortunately my fear has come true. After regaining access to PVP activities, I played for one week (a fair amount of trials this weekend) and this morning received a dreaded 2 month restriction. To me this indicates that there is something wrong. Bungie is obviously seeing something with my connection that is problematic. However, I received no error codes, no disconnects, no high ping warnings or other instability. I didn't notice any anomalies in play (nobody appeared to be particularly laggy or rubber-banding, though I understand those problems might not be visible to me.) However, my teammates didn't notice me lagging or have any indicators that there might be something wrong at a network level. There is nothing in my play experience to indicate what the problem may be, and sadly I have no idea whatsoever on what I might be able to improve to resolve this situation. At this point I would just really love to have some insight into the data or what Bungie is seeing on their side so that I could have a path to debug the issue. Without additional information I have no way of resolving the problem. --- Edit: some additional context as I've been wracking my brain trying to figure out what could be the problem. I checked packet loss to several locations using both ping via terminal as well as packetlosstest.com. Both show consistently 0% packet loss and fast pings (in the 2-5ms range).

Here are some suggestions that may help with connection issues:

1. Use a wired connection rather than Wi-Fi 2. Quit any program or turn off other devices that are streaming 3. Clear your console cache or, if on PC, verify the integrity of your game files. 4. • D2 requires more stability than any other game you play. It could be jitter causing the problem. Runing the test to the closest default server never reveals problems in a connection. Try a server 3000 miles or more away and see what the results are. I hope this helps.
