Unbalanced matchmaking creates AFK farmers, and puts players off of PvP.
I am a D1 vet and play at a hobbyist level in D2 (maybe 10hrs/wk?). The most disheartening experience I have in Destiny is when I am playing a competitive game mode like Gambit or Crucible, and my team is set against some very highly skilled players who mop the floor with us. Granted at the outset of any match, one team is going to have a skill advantage over the other. I am talking about by team members being suppressed, mobbed, spawn killed, and unable to get five steps and a shot off.
I have a few fellow D1 vets who are fantastic people and adept players who would help anyone with anything - except Crucible. They would rather put a raid team together than play a single match in Crucible. They would rather spend four-to-five hours explaining game mechanics to new players than spend ten minutes getting stomped in Crucible. It can be just so demoralizing, killing any fun you are having in the game.
I had one such experience today. About halfway through a Control match in which my team were just getting stomped, I just gave up. I need competitive match completions for a Solstice achievement, so I spent five minutes changing ornaments and shaders on my armor. I became an AFK farmer. Ew.
And it is turning PvP into PvE for highly skilled players. Where is the challenge of farming kills on a bunch of novice players who go AFK or leave because they stand no chance? I can't "get gud." I have a 9-5 job. Ten hours is the most I can play in a week.
I am not saying that it is the skilled players' fault. They are playing the game just like me. They just happen to be way better at PvP. The matchmaking is awful at times. "Breaking up teams to find a better match" is a running joke in my clan. Maybe we suck. But there are other people at our skill level who feel the same.
I hope to see some skill-based matchmaking. That might look like an invisible, slowly decaying competitive rating which places a player in one of five tiers, ranging from novice to elite. A group of players on one side of the field with their respective skill-based tier, would be matched with players whose tiers mirror their own. Or perhaps without tiers, players could be gathered for a match based on a deviation of rating which increases with matchmaking time.
Whatever it is, something must be done. Being stomped by expert players is the antithesis of fun. I don't care what Azteccross, Wallah, or any of them say. Most players can't even hope to reach 50 defeats in a game. I wish Bungie would balance matchmaking as closely as they balance hand cannons and SMG's.
I do acknowledge that Bungie listens and cares. They get paid if people like their product. So please be nice to dev's. If getting stomped by a six-stack in Control is demoralizing, try getting death threats for just trying to do your job well.

1 ReplyGo read a TWAB. Preferably the most recent one, because it covers almost everything you're ranting about.

1 ReplyRead the new twab. They are finally introducing some sbmm at the start of the next season in control only. After so long, they finally couldn't pretend to be blind and deaf anymore, when it comes to the problems you described.
