TBF they did kinda get lucky, they admitted as much, at least with the PvP part. There was no PvP planned until a few months before launch, they threw something together after a vote. The 7 creators voted on every decision, and this was 3-3 n the last guy said yes to PvP but he wasn't sure it would work. So could easily have released with no PvP. On a different note, the same guy who voted yes, had the last vote in the Activision deal, and voted yes again making it 4-3, only to see Activision then tear his story to bits ultimately ending with him in court and leaving the company. Had he voted no on those 2 occasions, halo may never have thrived, destiny may never have existed, bungie maybe would no longer be a thing.
