first off, i believe the situation we are in is far worse than you described since it's possible that Savathun has hijacked the chess-like game from The Witness and in consequence The Witness that once was present is now absent; thus The Witness no longer has the power to mediate the game between The Gardener and The Winnower. If the string theory is correct, then we exist in a multiverse. Whether or not Savathun can successfully take over all the universes that comprise the multiverse is unknown but what is known is that she has somehow managed to tie a knot in our universe given that she can time travel.
As far as i know, time travel is only possible in a closed/looped space-time system. I do not believe that the multiverse is composed of infinitely many closed/looped systems, just the one that we are in presently for the last 7+ years of Destiny.
This would explain why The Gardener and The Winnower both shared their powers of light and darkness with us because they probably agreed that the Witness has been kidnapped and someone is ruining the game: sabotaging it and looting their throne worlds.
That's what is at stake: the defeated chest pieces that The Gardner and The Winnower have in their throne worlds. Visualize a chess match from start to finish and you'll know what i mean.
Oryx was able to reanimate and take the pawns, rooks, bishops, knights, etc. and use them to build an army. Savathun is now able to loot anyone and everything and manifest the destiny she wants and probably has been since the beginning.
Who knows tho. I am far from being anyway near a lore expert. Im just casually blending real world with virtual world stuff.

Maybe I missed something. Where was it stated in the game that the witness was the mediator between the gardener and the winnower? It sounds more like a theory from the OP. Yes we are told the witness isn’t the darkness but rather is cloaked in it. By that same vein the traveler and the gardener (whether separate or the same being) isn’t the light but using it.

it wasn't stated anywhere that the witness is the mediator i just have a hunch and the op does too i think. do you recall when you first met the speaker in D1? That short clip where it shows the universe being slowly smothered/consumed by this spooky octopus-like blackened goo? He then says the darkness is coming back and there's no stopping it. the way i interpret it is that stuff is the witness. it is present when a sun/star is born and is present when a sun/star dies. There are 3 stages that a sun/star goes through during its life cycle and i will be using simple metaphors to describe: 0. See below 1. Generative: a fertilized egg has been triggered to start growing really quickly until it's ready to hatch, aka the egg can not contain it anymore. *the game between the winnower and the gardener has already begun inside the egg and the gardener is winning *the egg is protecting the developing youngstar from the witness it is surrounded by (its pushing the witness) 2. Operative: the youngstar hatches and a solar system is created. the youngstar transitions through 9 stages/trials (sun-mercurcy-venus-earth-mars-jupiter-saturn-uranus-neptune) *the game continues but the winnower and gardener are both losing as much as they are winning at this point. *the witness is no longer being pushed and a balance is established 3. Degenerative: the youngstar is beginning to turn into an oldstar and starts shrinking *the game continues but now the winnower is winning and the gardener is losing *the witness is now given the opportunity to push back; not forcefully but complementary ~ in synchronicity 0. Origin: depending on the size of the star, it will turn into a white dwarf and black dwarf ... or a neutron star and blackhole *the game between gardener and winnower is over: the winnower always wins in the end *the witness has seen the full circle and has a new pet named pluto to take care of! Pluto would be the shell of the former star. Interestingly Walt Disney named a DOG after Pluto. If this was a nod at the acronym formed from Generative, Operative, Degenerative, that would be pretty cool! Maybe Pluto can get seeded/fertilized and become The Taveler again?
