I was just using the SMG to prove how bad the stunning is on the captain I normally just run xeno to nuke the captains after stunning

You don't even need Xeno. Get a solid rocket launcher like a Bad Omens or a Code Duello depending on the elemental burn and you can obliterate champions without spending your exotic slot.
