If done properly, I think a modern RPG has the greater potential to be good.
However, in actual execution I find most modern RPGs to feel a little bland, while isometric and top down ones feel much more unique, and interesting.
So, I’ll have to go with classic.

This, I think, encapsulates my opinion perfectly.

‘Tis the price of being popular. All the unique titles get drowned out by the big titles that are just in it for the Money. Well, that, and, like, the actual price. 3D games are more expensive to make, and stuff. :p

Lots of times games that don't go all out on graphical perfection are more filled with content and actual quality stories where triple A, big budget games would not. People love Obsidian for Outer Worlds and New Vegas, but few know that a CRPG, Pillars of Eternity, saved the company between those games. Most probably never heard of the game, yet it kept the company alive so it could make what they are making now.

Artistic styles look better than hyper-realistic ones, anyway. More games should stop spending as much on all these fancy graphics, and go for something more unique! Like, if you ever become a game designer and are for some reason like “Man, I really want Aifos to play my game!”, just give it some nifty hand drawn animation and I’ll fall in love with it! :p Oh, Pillars of Eternity was made by Obsidian? I never played it, but I had heard of it a while back. Didn’t know it was one of theirs, though. :o

Realistic is nice and all, but if everything looks like the real world then all games look the same. I prefer at least a little bit of liberty to be taken to make sure it's not just real life on a screen. Dishonored for example has a great style, and Fallout and Elder Scrolls look great even though they don't look exactly like real life. Pillars of Eternity is awesome. It has some of the best roleplay value I've ever played in a game, and great companions. The way it saved Obsidian is interesting. They were going through their normal "our games got cancelled and now we have nothing to work on and are about to go bankrupt", you know, normal Obsidian stuff. So their lead designer who is responsible for pretty much all their best games said he wanted to make a CRPG. He convinced them that there would be enough people out there who wanted the old ways so they started a record breaking Kickstarter account. It saved Obsidian basically, by going old school. (They actually wanted to make Baldur's Gate 3, but were unable to do so.)

Plus it’s these uber realistic graphics that are a big part of why games cost so much to make, and why they’re so big to install. Huh, that’s neat! I’d say I should give it a try sometime, but I know I’d never get around to it.
