In general I think the rank up mechanic could and should be a lot deeper. Like you said I agree ranking up with a vendor should be natural like in Destiny 1
However I'd also like to see them expand it into a more RPG style, where Ranking up actually feels like you're climbing the ranks rather then filling a bar for the hundredth time. Give us dialogue, or have new stuff open up to us as we progress

Honestly I'd like it if as we rank up with NPCs we unlock exclusive dialogue and get to know them better. Max level they'd consider us a friend and give us discounts or something
