I’m still bummed Steve made it in. I can’t complain too much, because Min Min was probably my #3 choice for making it in, but ugh. Steve. It’s not the Minecraft rep, it’s Steve in particular. Such a boring character. Surely they could’ve come up with something more interesting. But, for all my disdain, I have to admit his moveset is.. Okay. At least, from watching the trailer thing with Sakurai. I haven’t actually cared to play since he was added.

  • Agreed. Steve, that’s cool and all, but he just looks so bland and smug. I really want to punch him. Then again, this is from a guy who hardly plays and mained link previously.

  • Huh. Never really thought of him as smug. I can kinda see it now, though.

  • Those cold unblinking eyes, chowing down on that piece of meat as a silently watches with delight your demise. Teabagging the show disrespect for his opponents.

  • Prefering a first party over literally anyone else (except maybe an anime character) is kinda lame tbh. Especially a first party character who’s moveset consists of 50% of the same move To quote Alpharad during his last stream: “It’s been long enough for us to stop pretending Min Min is cool right? Easily the worst DLC character added to Smash” I don’t mean to sound like a сunt but that’s kinda how you’re seeming to me. You really finna shit on everyone liking Steve when the character you prefer in fuсking Min Min of all things. Like Charles said: Steve’s a gaming icon. I doubt a lot of people even knew who Min Min was before she was put into Smash

  • Personally, I think Smash should’ve stayed first party entirely. It was a lot better when it was Nintendo characters all duking it out rather than anyone from video games in general. And I’m a huge fan of ARMS, wherein I main Min Min, of course I’m a big fan of her. As I said, she was my #3 choice (probably) behind NiGHTS/Reala, and Squigly (the latter of which I know has 0 chance of making it). And it’s not like I’m going around telling everyone who likes Steve they’re dumb; Charles asked for my opinion, and I gave him my opinion. I’m going to stick by it, too; I think Steve was a dumb choice for Smash, and that’s not really going to change.

You have to appeal to a much larger audience than just a single platform to make a game this big and keep it that way. And besides, according to Sakurai himself Smash is supposed to be a “celebration of ALL gaming”, not just limited to Nintendo. Of course they’re going to need some big names. How’d you feel about Cloud? He wasn’t even on a Nintendo console at the time of Smash 4
And I’m a huge fan of ARMS, wherein I main Min Min, of course I’m a big fan of her. And even Min Min only really got in as an ARMS 2 advertisement. Not a lot of people bought the first game. In the end, it shouldn’t even matter what the source material of a character is. The mechanics they bring to the game should. Steve easily has the most unique moveset of anyone in Smash regardless of his source material. Though not the most of any platform fighting, as Rivals of Aether exists and Steve’s edgeguarding style is similar to Kragg’s. It just so happens that he comes from the best selling game of all time, and it happens to have Nintendo ports. Min Min came from a mediocre game where she isn’t even the mascot and has an exceptionally lame moveset. Steve is objectively a better addition when it comes to gameplay. Your bias against Minecraft is keeping you from seeing what actually matters about a DLC character. It’s like the people who suck off Geno...

How’d you feel about Cloud? He wasn’t even on a Nintendo console at the time of Smash 4
I don’t think so. Smash was still going plenty strong in Brawl, which was still almost completely Nintendo. From what I heard, PS All-Stats just wasn’t a very good game, with significantly less iconic characters. Disclaimer that I never played it, though, that’s just what I heard. I’m neutral on Cloud. Don’t particularly care one way or the other.
Yeah you’re gonna have to pick characters people actually know. And even Min Min only really got in as an ARMS 2 advertisement. Not a lot of people bought the first game.
I reiterate my point that sales shouldn’t be what drives representation. ARMS didn’t get a lot of sales because of a general hatred for motion controls, but it was a genuinely good game. A genuinely good game that admittedly lacked some single player options, but eh, what can you do?
Well that’s a dumb opinion. I’m not biased against Minecraft, Steve’s just a boring character. A game about building is hardly where I’d look when trying to find a new person to add to my fighting game. There’s even more interesting characters in Minecraft I would’ve preferred. Like, they had some neat designs in the story mode didn’t they? Unique =/= mean better. I’ll take a simple, reliable moveset over an excessively complicated one any day. But as I said, if Steve has any redeeming features, it’s in his moveset. As much as I dislike him being in, Sakurai at least knows what he’a doing. Every character in Smash has a good moveset. It’s knowing that he could do justice to just about any character out there that makes Steve so boring.

  • Well be happy for us then! :) Are you saying that the highest selling game of all time doesn't deserve to be in the game, a celebration of gaming? :O And I think Steve was the best choice! 😁 he embodies the title of the game! :D

  • Yes, that’s exactly what I’m saying. What characters do/don’t make it into Smash shouldn’t be based on game sales, but on character appeal. It doesn’t fit Smash Bros. or Minecraft. Steve feels awkward, and out of place, while simultaneously looking as bland and generic as possible. I don’t understand how anyone can unironically want a guy who places blocks over an interdimensional space wizard, edgy as all hell reality warping mercenary, flying dream jester, any number of fish and/or bird people, or.. I dunno, anyone else who’s actually cool?

  • Not all cases should be like that, yes, but here it should be. The impact minecraft has had on us all and gaming in general is massive! It would be wrong to not have him in! We'd rather have something unique and special to us than another fire emblem character! While you may not like it, there is a vast majority that is overjoyed by his inclusion, including me 😁

It would be wrong to not have him in!
I don’t think that should matter. In an ideal world.. Well, Smash would’ve stayed Nintendo. But, assuming adding non-Nintendo characters is an inevitability, then in an ideal world, the only thing that factors into who gets added is character appeal. Not how popular or influential they are, not what game they’re from, but purely based on the merits of the character themselves. Which leads me to my next point..
We'd rather have something unique and special to us than another fire emblem character!
That’s exactly it. There are an uncountably many characters out there far more unique & interesting than Steve. He doesn’t have a cool design, or an interesting personality; he’s designed to be a blank slate. Blank slate characters are the worst to be added to Smash.
While you may not like it, there is a vast majority that is overjoyed by his inclusion, including me 😁
Er, and enjoy? I guess? Question mark? I dunno, what did you want me to say here? I’m not calling you out for liking Steve or anything; you just asked for my opinion, so I gave it to you.
Steve feels awkward, and out of place, while simultaneously looking as bland and generic as possible.
This is an incredibly dumb argument. G&W exists. Literally every single time someone mentions this argument in the Smash community someone else brings up G&W and it shuts them up

Maybe I’m just used to G&W but neither of these things apply to him, imo. He feels very visually distinct, and interesting; a 2D character in a 3D game? I think that’s neat! As for why his animations don’t stand out? I couldn’t really tell ya. They just don’t.

  • His model wasn’t 2d in Melee. Hell for the most part it isn’t even 2d in Ultimate based on the z-axis glitch. Only during some moves. Melee players felt the same way about G&W that you feel about Steve. It was dumb and it’s dumb now

  • Well, whether it’s actually 2D doesn’t matter too much; it looks 2D for general gameplay, and I still think it’s a neat idea. Admittedly, he would probably be the third character I’d remove were I forced to kick 3 people off the roster—behind Steve & Pac-Man, but out of the three I’d say he’s the best.
