-*-*Note: After the dozens of comments and watching others go back and forth with the topic, I can see why sun-setting could help the game and ultimately have changed my view. I'm still a bit upset about it but it might be the start of bringing one of my favorite games to it's full potential. Seeing other people's perspectives helped me see why I was wrong and why sun-setting can be good. So chill with the comments because ultimately sun-setting will happen and people are gonna be upset. Plus I'm one of those people who hates having unread notifications.*-*-

Hi there! Just your average destiny 2 player who wants to voice their opinion.
I've been loving and hating this game ever since it was released; waiting for a chance to get into the servers on launch day, whenever different metas came and went, the great stories we've gotten (no matter how upsetting losing Cayde-6 was). I've recently played Destiny 1 to go back to the roots and play the game I so fondly remembered. I was both filled with nostalgia and disappointed. The game was so fun to play when it was the main thing going and I had a blast looking through the OG tower and all of it's little secrets. The gameplay however, cannot compare to that of Destiny 2 and I say that with a bit of sadness. Destiny 1 was great for it's time. Destiny 2 has had it's ups and downs and has the potential to be something absolutely astonishing. The story being developed and the upcoming return of the character who left us with so many questions. I look forward to playing Beyond Light but I believe there is something wrong.
The simplest way to put it is: I believe sun-setting equipment is a poor idea. I'm glad they aren't making the same mistake as they did in D1 when they sunset the exotics as well. However, I find that as the game develops our "play it your way" motto has become "play it our way". I distinctly remember that being a big point that Bungie wanted to express with Destiny 2 and it was definitely something that sounded a lot more interesting. I believe Bungie has fallen short on that idea in the last year.
The reasons I believe sun-setting is a poor idea are as follows:
-Forces us to play their way as opposed to our way
-I genuinely doubt that they'll be able to produce enough new weaponry after Beyond Light releases to sufficiently replace the arsenal they're making obsolete
-It feels even worse because the guns will remain there, in our vaults, obsolete and out-dated when they don't need to be. They will become nothing more than trophies or for Crucible weapons.
-I think that rather than force us to use new weaponry to advance they should've let us keep are arsenals and introduce weapons actually worthy of using instead of what we have now.
-Quite frankly, if I want to keep using my Felwinter's Lie or Exit Strategy then I should be allowed to without it hindering my ability to progress.
Finally I simply think there should've been more involvement of the community with such a decision. I don't have all the answers and solutions but I think a vote could've been a really good chance to make sure that the playerbase is going to be happy with such a controversial decision. I don't mean the kind of vote where it's only on their website or Twitter where it makes it so only the people who go there can vote. If there was a way to implement it so that everyone could vote and not have to check Twitter or Bungie.net to see that there's a vote then I believe it would be a better way to make sure the playerbase isn't going to be outraged. I understand the idea of people making fake accounts for it or some other way to make the votes unfair but ultimately it still leaves the choice to the playerbase, the people who actually play the game and the various types of players. This solution might not be the best as the losing side may become more outraged or some other negative consequence that I cannot foresee. Alternatively, introduce a mechanic where we can level up our arsenal with us in a different way. Instead of infusing other weapons and armor to bring it to a higher level, we would have to work through a very difficult process to increase the max light level of our arsenal. If someone truly is adamant enough about keeping their arsenal then they can go through a difficult process to keep their arsenal. Once again, I don't have all the solutions so I'm not sure how it could work exactly but the idea of increasing the max light level for sun-setted weapons should not be an easy one. It should be a challenge that will allow people who are truly adamant about keeping their arsenal a chance to do so but having to prove it. I've pre-ordered Beyond Light and will live with whatever they do as I am a single person and cannot influence Bungie alone. And there are those that would disagree with me, which is perfectly fine, but ultimately I will have to respect their choice. Perhaps, though very unlikely, after launch they may see the community react more negatively to sun-setting than anticipated to a point where they drop the concept of sun-setting and remove a limit of max light level for all equipment. Just a hopeful thought I suppose.

1 ReplyI cant believe people still defend this sunsetting bull.

Sunset my gear, sunset my business.

I think of sun setting can be managed and pulled off the right way it’s not an issue. But I honestly don’t think Bungie will provide what they are taking away. Think about it. Red war, all expansions, Mars, Mercury (even though I actually don’t care if it’s taken away) Titan, crucible maps, crucible modes, Strikes, gambit prime, reckoning, a sh*t ton of armor and weapons, 5 raids, Menagerie, and more...theyre are going to take away everything we paid for, but not replace it, your taking away more than 60% of the game but can’t give us something to replace it? How will it feel when we have to lvl up our characters and have to play on old crucible maps? Or strikes or the same dumb gambit maps we’ve had for years. It’s just a take but not give situation. And that is why this sunsetting and vaulting process is not a good idea, I think a Destiny 3 would’ve been a better alternative.

I’m neither for or against sunsetting. I need to see it work first. But what I can say is that if the other option to prevent power creep would be static roles again, I’m 100% in favor of sunsetting.
-
I can see benefits to pve that come from sunsetting but I can’t find I single thing that sunsetting helps in pvp. And if someone says it takes the good weapons out of the meta, (beloved, revoker, etc.) than 1) we could just nerf those guns and 2) what benefit would come from taking the not so good guns out of the meta as well?

30 RepliesEdited by Swiftlock: 10/14/2020 6:31:43 PMNot really "heated". It looks more like you aren't seeing the big picture of sunsetting.
they should've let us keep are arsenals and introduce weapons actually worthy of using instead of what we have now.
That's how you get power creep. You'd have to build immensely powerful weapons to get players to put down Mountaintop, god-rolled Beloved, Felwinter's, Mindbenders, Wendigo, etc. Then you need even better weapons to top those weapons... it wouldn't stop. I don't agree with a lot of how Bungie is executing sunsetting, but I agree with the IDEA of sunsetting in that it pushes players to put down the same stale meta guns they've used for years and shake up their loadouts in endgame content.

Very well put 👍

For such a heated topic, I gotta say this post is really civil and the edit was a really mature way to handle responses.

2 RepliesOh look a sun setting post.... Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz

2 RepliesI've got into gritty and in some cases explosive debates on this subject. All I've got to say to you is straight forward. Sunsetting needs to happen, is it the be all end all problem solver? No. It's the smaller piece of the solution to improving things down the line. ""play it your way" motto has become "play it our way"" Anyone who bought that motto at face value.........I pity and weep for. I also find it hypocritical when people shout about that motto but blissfully ignore the fact the community has been adamant about specific loadouts. LFG will show you that better than anywhere that we've not been playing our way for years. "Finally I simply think there should've been more involvement of the community with such a decision." Good in theory but an awful strategy in practice. We'd be back where we are now. People blaming streamers and tubers for a devs choices. "-Quite frankly, if I want to keep using my Felwinter's Lie or Exit Strategy then I should be allowed to without it hindering my ability to progress." If you're fine using the same loadout for everything sure. If you're okay with content being solely built around your loadouts cool. Let's just turn everything in the game into reckoning and call it a day. That's why sun setting is partly happening. One small part of fixing the issues we have. TLDR: This game is a hamster wheel and sun setting maintains that wheel to a small degree. However if you want content to feel worth while it's better to accept what's happening now. So you're ready for when the inevitable sun sets. It ain't perfect but it's a start.

I opened and closed this so fast

1 ReplyMany will get reintroduced anyway. Just like exotics have, and now planets will etc. Anything to save actually working on something new.
-
The horse is dead. The players that are pissed about this have mostly left the building. The ones that don’t care are tired of hearing about it.
-
Ultimately their reasoning they offered was to allow them to male more weapons like recluse and revoker and such but if they don’t then it will be completely pointless and will just be a case of Bungie wants you to use the new thing they spent effort on designing
-
1 ReplyDestiny is only doing it because they ran out of crap to reskin. Without these they would actually have to do some real work and we all know bungle is allergic to real honest work. Expect to be disappointed because destiny 2 has great potential but bungle does nothing but use only a few parts of it to farm our wallets and the rest they don't give a shit about. They don't care about the community and never have despite the lies that constantly come out of their mouths.

1 ReplyIt’s not gonna get heated at all, Sunsetting is a dead horse ,we are wasting our time kicking it.
-
1 ReplyI'm not too upset that weapons are getting sunset, BUT I am pissed that armor was added to sunsetting after the initial announcement of sunsetting.

They should've just removed perks or mods they thought were too powerful. Just like shot package back in D1

1 Replysunset my gear sunset my buisness.

TL;DR
sunsetting bad FIGHT!
2 RepliesSunsetting isn't a poor idea. It's actually genius because it saves you the money you would have spent on a brand new game, and you still get to keep and play with your old stuff. It's a win-win for everyone, love it or not. I'm sure some of you have your little "grievances" with the game, but those are merely self-inflicted individual ssues that you need to reflect on and accept as a personal flaw.

Come November 19th none of this will matter.

2 RepliesI'm just glad their not removing the gear from the game... If they did that I'd actually get mad I wasted 6 years and £2000+

11 RepliesGame companies don’t let their players vote on what happens in their game. This happens nowhere and to think Bungie should leave decisions about the game in the hands of common people is absurd. There is a reason they pay their employees and call them professionals. I’d hate to see what this game would be if left in the hands of the players voting on things.

2 Repliesanother sunsetting crybaby. listen man I don't know what guns you have that you grip so fiercely but i understand the points you make. personally i care more about the story than the guns i use. which is quite laughable since d2 story has been pretty bad including forsaken. sunsetting will remain a thing and wont get changed last second.
