Two things here: 1.) As long as cheaters are still given free rein on PC, those numbers are not going to improve. People that want to just play, have a good time, or challenge themselves in that mode will move on to something else, or another game entirely. Bungie hurt themselves here more than anything. They had months to at least address the issue. Instead they left a quest that, at best is an annoyance to cheaters but can be overcome in a weekend, to essentially gatekeep as a cheater solution. 2.) The elitism associated with Trials is too much for some. And I am one of those people. I liked trials in D1. And I would LFG as a non-tryhard just looking to challenge myself with no demand or expectation of a flawless run. And I found people that were of a similar position. And it was fun...until it wasn't... Too many people would insist that a win = justification to spam your inbox with hate. And too many people insisted that a loss = justification to spam your inbox with hate. What was just me want to improve and get better with a few individuals that felt the same became more of an exercise in blocking numerous Destiny players. I am not someone who is so hyper competitive the win is the absolute thing I need out of a game, and when I take a loss I generally send some GG's to the opposing team. I am on console so the likelihood of cheating is minimal, so if I get spanked the probability that the players are just at a higher skill level is basically assumed. But it seems that few others share this sentiment, and the times I won I was told that I was reported for network manipulation, and when I lost I was told to stop playing pvp because I am garbage. Also, in both cases, insert something crude about my mother. After a while that level of toxicity is grating. So much so I haven't even bothered with trials in D2. With my experience in Comp over the past year and a half I do not suspect that trials would be any better...

There has been months of feedback about it so I don’t really need to repeat all the reasons. I liked trials in D1, which makes it surprising D2 is so far short of the mark. I know what you’re talking about. One of the ideas behind the system suggested seems to be the idea that players will work their way up the tiers over time, which can be far more interesting and exciting to players who aren’t starting on a squad of sweats. Over time they may become sweats but it’s not a requirement for getting into the mode.
