The fact is that the content theyre removing saw a little more than 2% of the total playtime across platforms for the last two seasons.
You're money wasn't wasted, you played and had access to the content for years. The DCV was put in place so they wouldn't have to make a D3. So your options are the following:
Have content vaulted and brought back for later use, but the content is taken away from you to "play"
Or
Have all D2 content taken away from you for D3 in which case you will have to pay for all of the content again anyway.

What is it about D3 that makes you think you lose D2 content??? If they make D3, then all the content in D2 stays. You can play it at your pace, and not feel pressured to be playing all the time. I have D1 installed and can always go back and play all of it from SRL to Kings Fall. It's not gone, just not relevant to the current story. That happens the older a game gets. Veterans want to experience new content not revisit old. Bringing old content into D2 because new players missed out is a insult, you can buy D1 for a few bucks with all 3 years of content. Imagine having Beyond Light and Witch Queen combined to be vanilla D3, and D2 kept everything including the Bunkers and Corridors of time, Mara Sov dialogues, Almighty event in cutscene form. That's a meaty game with plenty to do and earn alone. Content is never lost with sequels, that's like saying no one plays Halo 1 - 4 because Halo 5 is current
