I'm afk forge farming right now, myself. Now before you get angry with me, understand something: I'm doing it in a way that people like you (trying to actually do the forge) aren't affected. If you lower your power level enough, you're guaranteed to match with other people who are also afk farming. Look, I know it sucks, but since Bungie overlooked what might happen (which, they seem to be doing A LOT) with the Umbral Engram system, try making a fireteam and going into the forge with a full squad.
All of that said, the guys in there who don't lower their power level so they can avoid getting matched with people actually trying to do the forge? Scum bags.

People farming forges should not affect normal games, so long as they have lowered their light level to below 750, usually lowered to under 600. You will not be matched with them.

Nah that’s not true. I’m 1017 and being. Matched with people 800 and lower. Stop being toxic and actually play the game how it’s supposed to be played.

People who are lower than 750 specifically wont be matched with you. If theyre around 800, theyre either bad at underleveling, or new lights.

Not even arguable, above 750 people will actually do the activity which kicks you and ruins the farm. I was in the forge for 12 hours yesterday and almost maxed my postmaster with engrams, that’s not possible if you don’t get below 700-650 at least
