Time travel dude.
I am no lore master so I will give you the short version.
When we see Saint in Curse of Osiris, he’s very dead. The Vex killed stripped his light and killed him. They “buried” him out of respect because of all the vex he killed and all the trouble they had to go through to kill him.
We went back in time and pretended his death. So we saved him before he actually died. Saint still had to go through the Infinite forest to get back to reality, which took hundreds of years. That’s why he only showed up last season because he was no longer dead, but stuck in the forest.

I would only add that Saint-14 chose to fight his way back through the infinite forest rather than take the shortcut with us home and that it is my understanding that it was not quite so long as a few hundred years but perhaps closer to a few dozen years. (still an insane amount of time to murder your way home when you could just fast travel through time with your rescuer) This only bothers me a smidge because we definitely could have used a titan like Saint-14 for the events he missed. Crota, Red War, etc.... and we don't mention it, and he could have seen his "father" the Speaker again which means so much more to me than getting back in time to fight alongside us :'(
