The reason is risk/reward. You get more damage by being in your enemy's business. Otherwise, you could throw a knife at a thrall across the zone and then deal max damage to enemies from a greater distance.

yeah, i see that, but then again, you're giving away your ranged melee for that purpose, instead of using it for a particular end. Food for thought i guess!
