There is something called Knockback Canceling. If you punch an enemy as soon as they use a move that knocks you back (the shield bash or a boss’ stomp), the charge you do when you punch will take priority and you won’t get knocked back, however you will still take damage from the attack.
You can also do it with a sword, both when you attack or swing the sword in the air, although the latter doesn’t cancel all knockback.

Doesn't work with phalanxes
-
Yes it does. The punch doesn’t have to deal damage, as long as you time it right.
-
No, because the phalanx attack can also 1 hit you just by hitting you. It is not usually the knockback anymore
-
I just fought several Phalanx and let them shield bash me several times, and none of their attacks one-shot me. I was then able to knockback cancel the bash and take them out with ease. If you want to try this same test, I went to the Quarry lost sector in the EDZ. There’s a Phalanx in the first room and two more in the second.

They can one-hit you rarely. I think it's caused by the guardian getting caught between the phalanx and his shield, causing the guardian's atoms to rapidly undergo nuclear fusion, annihilating the guardian completely and utterly, as if they've just been given a prostate exam by a Thrall in the Thorn strike.

Sounds about right.
-
It is entirely luck based. I have been instantly killed by a phalanx mid super melee animation.
-
Now was that the actual overhead swing the Phalanxes do or the knockback from the attack? Also are you in a Nightfall with Blackout on or are you in patrol? All of these factors matter.
-
Literally just the phalanx shield swing. Wouldn't matter where I was, since it was a misadventure.
-
Never had that happen to me before. Just how the game’s physics work I suppose. Best bet’s just to take them out at range.
