I am decently sure that the postmaster has worked this way since the release of Destiny 2, new items overwrite old items. I am also decently certain that somewhere Bungie has stated that they will not restore items due to player error. So, unfortunately, that is how the postmaster works and Bungie will likely do nothing about it.
