I think you only recieve the gun, not the catalyst. The catalyst drops from strikes

No, that was previously. Now the final part is supposed to give u the catalyst on completion. I have seen videos showing the same with people obtaining the catalyst from the quest. Perhaps bungie has changed it again? I don't think so though, I'm not sure.

There's nothing to suggest that they did. Are you sure you didn't earn the catalyst already? I would double check and just make sure. Just for laughs, you can also check the Postmaster and make sure it didnt land there or you can try to run the Risk/Reward quest on a different character.

If you've earned the catalyst, it would show on the details part of the gun right? And it certainly isn't with the postmaster. I have also seen another thread outlining this same issue a while back.

Correct, it should appear in the catalyst section of the weapon. I would try to just run it on a different character, see if you can get it to drop there.

Lol I've just recently started destiny so I only have one character at the moment. I guess I'll take this as incentive to start the next one!

Most vets have all three characters slotted out. It gives you versatility for events like raids and other activities. Of course, that means you have more to grind for, but that's a given. It's just something to try. I haven't seen it listed as a known issue, but as far as I know, the only way to get the catalyst is from that quest.
