The series still suffers from an identity crisis. And somehow it has become even more and more rigid over the years. It does two counterintuitive things: 1. It tries to be too many different things at once. Which COULD work, but doesn’t because of the second thing. 2. A SEVERE lack of player options/control of how and when they can acquire loot. This current game model, where the vast majority of worthwhile loot is activity specific and is spread out across the entirety of the experience, this game that encompasses very different activities, so much so that it could be called multiple different genres, is impractical and it has to prevent their ability to accurately gauge likability. It has to severely hinder Bungie’s best source for determining what players like and play the most. They can’t possibly have an accurate gauge of that when they don’t let players pursue loot by playing what they like the most. Instead they have double and triple downed on this rigid activity specific loot system where many players have to begrudgingly spend way more time than they want to on activities that don’t like nearly as much as others, if at all, or they have to miss out on loot. On weapons or entire armor sets, or cosmetics. People like options, and this model they use basically goes against human nature. They could balance time to acquisition and amount of rewards against challenge and time investment, but they don’t. It’s do this in exactly this way, or miss out. People would complain FAR less if they could avoid the activities that they find kind of boring or arduous. They’d have more to do and go for if they could do it more on their own terms. As it is now, people just straight up pass on certain things because they derive no real fun from going for it. Remember when they talked about having stories for how you acquired your prized loot? I do. I remember following this series prior to release. Well, there are no stories. There is only one story, and it’s the same story for everyone.

Why should I care about X activity if doing something that takes 0 effort reward me with the same items? There is no reason than for those activities. There is incetive versus effort so activities that require more effort should be more rewarding. It pushes players to play the game more and to invest more for better pay offs.
Well, there are no stories. There is only one story, and it’s the same story for everyone.
No, to be completely 100% honest you completely miss the darn point of that idea. The journey of how they got those items are different for everyone, and some may not be able to make that journey.

I didn’t say there should be zero effort options. Just different options. Optional paths. Again, they can balance time to acquire and amount of rewards against challenge and time investment. It lets players pursue things on their own terms to maximize their possible enjoyment of the game.
Why should I care about X activity if doing something that takes 0 effort reward me with the same items? There is no reason than for those activities.
So again, no zero effort options. That being said, would you not just play the option that you found more fun? That sounds Ike you’d rather turn a game into work than have the option to make it more enjoyable for yourself. I’d personally rather something take me 5 times as long but that I actually find it fun, than do something I don’t find fun for several hours straight. People define fun differently and this game is too many very different things to be so rigid. People need options. The default game model shouldn’t be so dismissive. It would be OPTIONAL. For everyone. And this would also allow Bungie to more accurately determine what kinds of activities and paths people prefer the most so they can better make content more enjoyable moving forward. The journey is always the same when the path is always the same and the activity never changes.

  • There was nothing in the post that said anything about less effort. It talked about options. Having options doesn't equal less effort.

  • No that is what he is inferring, because what happens is people than look at what actvities requires less EFFORT for the rewards. I have seen this 'attempted' consolidation and it backfires horrendously killing activity in many activities because they were demanding but people really wanted X gear but didn't feel like wanting to improve thier gameplay, they just turned around and looked for ways to find the grind that took the least amount of effort and would then AFK them. Now if you want to make the arguement that some exotics for example should have branching paths for PvP and PvE that's fine, but you shouldn't get raid gear for not doing the raid, you shouldn't get EP gear for not doing EP. Its called exclusive incentives to do activities to get out of your comfort zone and experiment. If you don't enjoy the content than.... DON'T DO IT!. Get over the fact you won't get every item in the game. Why the -blam- did Destiny all of a sudden get entitlement issues when it comes to loot? "It's a looter shooter!" So? Does Borderlands hand you every legendary weapon or item in the game from any activity? NO! They add certain ones to certain bosses to incentize you to actually fight those bosses.
