Recently discovered - if you have any completed bounties in your inventory, turn them all in before trying to use the key. It works.

Doesn't work for me - no bounties to turn in and I've lost 2 keys tonight (Nov 03) trying to do the box. First time I lost the key I thought maybe I did something wrong - so I redid the forge, got the key a second time and paid attention to what I was doing - and again, the key was consumed and there was no progress. So did the forge a THIRD time and now I'm holding on to the key until there's some kind of official update on this problem... :(

I never keep bounties when they are finished so this did not work for me.
