If you plan to be a way before preload date, just leave your PC on and Steam launched before leaving. It should auto download and be ready when you return.

Unlikely to happen unless you really don’t trust your electrical in your house. And the preload is actually up to steam not Bungie. Usually preloads only come up a few days prior to the launch so depends on when you go on vacation.
