• The rap that makes fun of rap isn’t actually horrible. Julian Smith’s “I’m reading a book”

  • Half the time the music is either really vulgar or really sexual. At least that’s my experience with Rap.

To be fair, yes there are a lot of people that have very vulgar and sexual lyrical content (and I assume that's because it isn't exactly difficult to write lyrics like that, plus it's very trendy right now), but there are also a ton of people that make very insightful, uplifting, motivational, inspiring rap lyrics, take J. Cole, Joey BADA$$, or Logic for example. There's also people that make really meaningful lyrics with a bunch of deep messages and quotables, take Kendrick Lamar, Earl Sweatshirt, or Brockhampton for example. There are also people that have mastered the art of just rapping, with tons of crazy flows, entendres, rhythm structures, and awesome punchlines, like Eminem, Joyner Lucas, J.I.D, or Token. Point is, just because you have had a poor experience with rap music, does not mean that the genre as a whole is bad.
Also if I misunderstood what you were saying I apologize, when I read your reply I'm assuming that you are also saying that rap isn't music.
• I’m not saying it’s not music, I’m just saying that most of it is just...well...bad. There are a few out there that are good but that tends to be the abnormal not the norm

  • I mean I get where you’re coming from, but objectively speaking, most rappers are more skilled and talented than most other “mainstream” artists or bands. Then again, I separate hip-hop from rap so feel free to disregard whatever I say 😂

  •
I’m not saying it’s not music, I’m just saying that most of it is just...well...bad.
I think that could be said for most if not all music, and considering rap is the biggest genre in the world right now, I don't find it surprising that most of it isn't good.

  • No, MOST of rap is pretty bad, it's way worse then any other music genre

  • Because facts Rap is just a dude talking overtop of a bunch of noises

  • Actually, no. Rapping at it's core is Rhythm and Poetry, sure when you define it as simply as you just did, it is just some guy talking over noises, but in that case, isn't that what most music is? I mean just look at rock music, or metal music, at the end of the day all it is, is some dude talking over instruments. Going by the definition of what music is (vocal or instrumental sounds [or both] combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion.), how is it that rap isn't music? I don't see how rap wouldn't fall under this definition

  • Because rock, country, etc. has music by instruments Whatever noises are in rap sound like someone hitting a two metal poles together(at least the popular rap that I hear commonly)

  • Are you saying that rap doesn't have instruments? Because that is completely and totally untrue, take these songs for example: Tonya - Brockhampton Humble - Kendrick Lamar C.R.E.A.M. - Wu Tang Clan Changes - Tupac Love Yourz - J. Cole And there are many, many more. To your second point, just because you have heard production like that in popular rap songs, does not mean that rap as a whole isn't music, you're generalizing a whole genre because of some songs that you've heard. That's like saying all rock isn't music because Nickelback exists, or like saying all metal isn't music because black metal exists. That's completely unfair to the people that put out really great rap music.

  • My apologies I meant the mainstream rap that people blast out of their car’s open windows while driving.

  • Most mainstream rap use instruments as well

  • The ones I’ve heard is literally a metronome playing over someone talking.

  • Probably the persons audio honestly. Take Logic’s “Homicide” with Em for instance. You may just hear the simple beat/high-hats/and the chime loop (the obvious part), but the sound stacks pretty well, especially when Em does his verse with the strings which is dope. What I’ve learned in music is that there’s always more than meets the eye (or ear), particularly in rap.

  • You may be right, I did just remember that some people can’t tell the difference between notes very well, so it is possible my brain just defaults them to a single sound as well

  • I’m gonna disagree with you in that. Disagreement stems from opinion, my opinion says rap isn’t music, just like older generations think rock isn’t music.

  • Things become mainstream for a reason. If all it took were two metal poles and talking regularly over it then everyone would be a mainstream rapper. You can disagree with the lyrics, think the flows are annoying, dislike the message, or make any other subjective criticism you want. But saying mainstream rap uses no instruments is absurd.
