Because whales have lungs and need to breathe oxygen. Edit: They jump specifically to make noise for long-distance communication that would normally be drowned out.

  • No that's not the reason why the JUMP out of the water. For breathing they just come to the surface sticking their blowhole above the water line.

    Both of you must have missed the word jump or really think they do this to get air and never saw how they actually get air.
