To me, it's more than simply someone who plays video games.
It's someone who enjoys doing so. Which might sound like the same thing, but I don't think it is.
If someone only plays mobile games, and only does so to pass away five minutes once a month, I don't consider that person a gamer.
Not saying there's anything wrong with that, but it's a very different person to someone who spends an hour or so playing a game every day, and actively looks forward to doing so.
I think there's also a separate category for passionate gamers - people who genuinely consider video games an art form, which is a different type of person again.

But what about a mobile game that requires long term time investment, I'm not saying angry birbs... I'm saying more in the realm of Farmville, age of the castle or whatever the hell called... these games have a significant investment of spare time required and some would say they enjoy that and call themselves Gamers... Zardosz put it well below; Gamer is often a self-applied label... Are they Gamers?

I don't discriminate based on genre. If someone plays mobile games at least somewhat frequently, enjoys doing so, and looks forward to doing so, they're gamers.
