Yesterday saw the launch of the season of the drifter. Here are the daily player population numbers:
PVE - 563k
PVP - 213k
That’s it if you just want the data.
For context this is the daily population from last Sunday March 3 2019:
PVE- 606k
PvP - 280k
That’s if you just want the data.
-My impression of the Data is that players are not happy with the direction of the franchise and are not coming back for the launch of new endgame content.
Replies to Frequently Used Nonsense Comments In Threads Like This:

1. Player rates always fluctuate and are down when there is a content drought and shoot back up when new content is released. - This shows the opposite. More people playing on a day at the end of content drought at the end of a poorly received season than on a reset day that included a large update and new content release.
2. More people play on weekends than week days - Typically this is true, but reset days also pull the highest numbers in a week. Content launch days are also traditionally much much higher. The problem is that you can’t have it both ways.
If I post weekend numbers I hear “more people play during the week around reset and then stop when they have all their milestones done so the weekend numbers are lower”. If I post reset numbers I hear “more people play during the weekend than a weekday because they have school and work during the week and more free time to play games on the weekend”. Which is it?
3. That’s just one day of numbers... - Yep.
4, ... so they don’t mean anything. - Not really, it means that less people played yesterday than did on Sunday. That has ramifications for the new season.
5. The player population will come back up when new content is released. - It didn’t. It might still improve steadily over the next month. We can’t know that right now. All we know right now is more people played at the end of a drought than on the first day new content came out. They didn’t even need to spend significant time to get counted. Just log in to see what new stuff there was.
6. Where did you get these numbers? - These are the worldwide all platform player statistics pulled from the Bungie API on public websites. PVE comes from Destinytracker.com and PVP from Guardian.gg. They aren’t perfect but they are the best data publicly available.
Also just a heads up I understand that things change over time. I’ve been recording daily player rates for a while, and I’m going to compile them and release them all together a few weeks into season of the drifter so if the population starts going up over the next couple weeks I will Be including that.
TLDR
The numbers weren’t a spike up because we content was released.
1 Reply770k / 302k for Sunday vs. Sunday numbers. They did go up, but for new content that's a pretty crummy bump up. I still curious to see if Thorn will get more people back than GP.

6 RepliesBlunt answer? No. Nuanced answer? Not really. This game is in trouble. What's makes me kind of sad and angry, is that they've made the game so tedious and so unrewarding to play that I don't even look forward to playing any more. I look at the possibilities this season, and all I feel is tired....and think "What's the point". I played three hours on Tuesday and accomplished nothing. All the Gambit Prime armor dropped at soft-cap. My "powerful" drops were 351, 352, 353 and 356. The 356 class item was a progression keeper. The 353 shotgun only got kept because its the new Gambit shotty. But the rest is garbage. Not even infusion fodder because I'm not stupid enough to waste cores on them. THIS is what this game has become? WTF are they DOING?!?!?!
-
3 RepliesAnd check this out. PVP numbers are higher than PVE (at the moment). I've never seen that throughout all of D1 and D2. Gambit is probably counting as PVP at Destiny Tracker, but still this is amazing. https://destinytracker.com/

1 ReplySigned in to comment here. I sunk 311 Days in to Destiny(1), according to my Xbox One. I put barely 12 hours in to Destiny(2) on it's initial launch, before I had entirely quit the game out of sheer disappointment at how many steps backwards the game took compared to steps forward. I hadn't touched the game until Forsaken came out, which I bought in to and was truly hyped once again - it felt like the game was coming back alive, and even though a lot of it was just doing what was already in Destiny(1), it still brought me back. However, about two months in to Forsaken, and after having done all content, I basically quit again. I haven't touched the game since. I didn't buy the Annual Pass, and Black Armoury looked incredibly disappointing - those of my friends that did get the Pass, told me not to do it, that Black Armoury felt like it should've been a free content update rather than something that costs $10. Now here we are, in Joker's Wild. Those same Pass-holder friends have told me that Joker's Wild is barely more than Black Armoury. Yes, there's a new Power Level and whatnot, but there's zero new content to grind it with. I was truly hoping that Bungie's split from Activision would give them the ability to really listen to the community and change the game as the lovers (including myself) of this universe wanted. I'm still not coming back, I highly doubt anything in Destiny(2) will bring me back. I will wait for Destiny(3), and I will buy it. I still adore the universe it's built in, the lore is extensive and very well-written, purely enthralling. If only the game itself was developed in such a way, but I will still hold on to that last glimmer of hope with the last installment of the series. Sincerely; an avid Destiny lover and former fan-boy.

5 RepliesWell... remember when Forsaken dropped, and everyone (critic and player alike) thought Gambit was the pussycat's pajamas. Bungie probably set S6 in motion based on that. Unfortunately, interest in Gambit cooled down a bit in the interim. But, content doesn't appear instantaneously. Since Bungie's on my blacklist, I hate to side with them. But let's keep in mind that they can't predict the future infallibly.

That's especially true towards people that can just look at destiny and laugh at how boring it looks. This is the majority of the gaming populace by the way. Until then the game will continually suffer "incentive to play" problems. Content fluff is only delaying the inevitable.

27 RepliesIts probably the absolute worst thing that can happen for a game like this. It's dead and no one even cares anymore. I don't even care anymore. Honestly it feels like bungie wanted to run this game into the ground.
-
Honestly the numbers from what I can tell are the dedicated vets, I'm not sure if this content drop was ment to draw in new players.

I am excited to get Thorn back as I loved that gun in D1. Aside from that, the only other thing I am looking for is a Midnight Coup replacement and the fact that we went from having player agency in the forge and forge weapons to now NONE is extremely disappointing. Aside from the 3 curated drops, there is no way to farm or earn the new prime weapons. The only guarantee is to do the intro quest. Hell, the Gambit Prime weekly milestone can reward normal Gambit loot...I already have numerous avenues for that not including the damn normal Gambit milestone. I was not excited about a season of Gambit as I burnt out real quick from it in Forsaken, but was willing to grind out Prime to finish Breakneck (oh wait thats bugged) and to get the Coup replacement. But because their design team finds something players like (agency in the forge weapons) and removes it for some absolutely atrocious drop rate that is so far only guaranteed once per character, I honestly have no interest. Hell, they even phoned in perk selection on the Exotic Ghosts.

4 RepliesThe mistake Bungie keeps making lately is simple- -by their logic, we just need to pump out more PvP styled activities to get the streamers interested again. The community will follow. They have followed this same tired course of action since D2 was released. but -having observed this debacle closely since D2's release and the subsequent 'streamer summit', and then moving forward, what seems to actually happen is that the streamers aren't touching this POS because the viewers don't care to play it, and thus don't care to watch it. Look no further than the recent round of nerfs that NO hobbyist player wanted. While they claim to understand what the base wants, it seems as though there is still a nefarious idiot in their ranks that is still desperate to achive 'balance' and is STILL convinced the Destiny franchise is but mere subtle tweaks away from being an E-Sports phenomenon. Bungie has completely forgotten, that even in PvP, this game is a 'hero-simulator', where the power fantasy is EVERYTHING. The recent round of nerfs just reinforces that they are rudderless in the imagination department and have lost touch with the player such as myself that used to play 10-12 hours a week to 'wreck' ads and feel like an unstoppable Guardian.

2 RepliesI thought that maybe, just maybe Tuesday's numbers were a glitch or a technicality for downloading the updates or something, but Wednesday's numbers were even lower. Season of the Drifter didn't re-engage almost anyone. If anything, it's just pissing people who have tried to hang along for the ride off. No PvP addition, no PvE addition (you can stick it trying to tell me Reckoning is PvE, only mechanically. I can't even do it without playing Dambit Prime first and the reward is just Dambit armor. Dambit!), a higher LL for no reason and a really poor showing for new gear. It's not all bad, they got rid of Clan bounties for XP (although they did turn the grind factor way, way up from where it was before), they tried to open up Comp for more people, and they added Forsaken exotics to Xur. But overall it's just not the kind of material all of my old Destiny friends would get excited about coming back to.

20 RepliesGambit was never a huge draw, it's silly to dedicate a whole 3 months of content for.
-
8 RepliesJesus...more Gambit? A whole season for Gambit. I don't get it. Gambit. Gambit Prime. Prestige Gambit. Hard Mode Gambit. Challenge Gambit. Gambit Control. Gambit Supremacy. Iron Gambit. Escalation Gambit. Gambit Mayhem. Rumble Gambit. Infinite Gambit. Trials Of Gambit. Blind Gambit. Black Gambit. Daily Heroic Gambit. Gambit Patrol and more!

1 ReplyYou'd think Bungie would try to win back the 11 million players that left after D2 launched. Instead of making more grindy, boring content based around the worst game mode in D2.
-
1 ReplyPlease remember that was on a Tuesday. Wait until the weekend.

4 RepliesAs a person who is an expert in complex scheduling, I can tell you that you are not able to compare a Sunday to any other day. The fact Tuesday is a work or school day makes it a light day. You have to wait until Sunday to compare numbers. Given there is no holiday in between, it should be a safe comparison. There are so many other factors that come into play and I won't get into it (yawn), but day of week and proximity to holidays are the biggest. Weather also comes into play I'm sure. The best comparison to be made would the the net increase or decrease from release to release last year versus this year. I used to do call traffic analysis and customer service scheduling for a large credit card processor, just so you know my background. I designed customized algorithms that were 99.3% accurate on a quarter hour basis, well before AI was applied to this sort of thing.

3 RepliesIt’s so funny because these numbers show exactly how I feel. I have less desire to play since the new season than I did literally last week. It’s 100% due to the fact that I’m not doing this painful bs grind to 700 after I just finished all three characters getting to 650. This game is a chore with no substance to backup the hours played. Screw bungie they have had that carrot on the stick for way too long shits rotted now and isn’t even desirable to chase.
-
2 RepliesI have an Annual Pass and i'm only reading this forum, before i decide to come back. As how it looks now, i'm not coming back, soon.
-
3 RepliesNo. I'm not coming back for Gambit. Anyone else? If S7 is also a let down, I may never return.
-
9 RepliesMany players were critical of Gambit when it initially released. So what does Bungie do...? Create a whole dlc for it. Out of touch much?...
-
2 RepliesEdited by D2_Dahaka_PAL: 3/7/2019 2:26:21 PMPlayers are starting to care about the game as much as Bungie does.

5 RepliesI have played Destiny religiously, since Alpha D1. That play time slowed to a trickle for Black Armory and I just turned the faucet off for Drifter. I can't see myself coming back after this. Three months with nothing of any substance to do is a long time to fall out of love with my hobby. I'm actually enjoying catching up on my sleep, feel a lot better overall and have zero temptation to log in anymore. I think I'm finally cured. 😷

I came back... For 2 games 😂 Im not playing gambit bungie
-
10 RepliesThis would probably be better if you waited a week, and pulled all the numbers from the week before and the week after JW dropped. Numbers from just 1 day each might not show the true player trends.
-
2 RepliesNumbers won't go up, they'll go down, guaranteed. No one's realised yet that tier 1 n 2 gambit armour are totally pointless. Give it a few weeks and once the casuals get tired of being farmed by teams of 4 from Peru, it'll be done. Why would anyone come back? Oh iron banner again, same armour and guns as 18 months ago. Raise your number to 700? Why?
