Hats saw a decline in use with the increase in cars. Previously, people traveled predominantly outside, either walking, riding a horse, or in a wagon or carriage. When cars became predominant in the 20's, people were spending less time in the sun and hats became largely unnecessary. Of course, people didn't change their habits overnight and hats were still worn throughout the 30's and 40's, however their usage was in decline.

  • Makes sense. Fashionable mini-parasols/mini-umbrellas. With less need to travel by walking, became more a fashion thing and less a utility thing, as is with most clothing.
