The Dark Souls board game is really fun. I don’t think it’s exactly what you mean, but I’d like to see a card game based on Steven Universe: Save the Light’s gameplay mechanics. I wouldn’t care if it’s SU specifically, just the mechanics. For instance, you’d get 5 Star Points every turn, which’d fuel your characters’ attacks, and then you’d have item cards that take 0. Not sure how they could work in the friendship gauge, though.

  • How did the friendship gauge work?

  • Basically, it was your super gauge. When two characters helped eachother out, like healing one another, defeating a Construct that was about to attack the other, etc., it’d fill a “friendship gauge”. You could also manually congratulate a character who just performed something amazing. Once full, whatever two characters have a gull gauge would perform a team attack, which ranged from fusion, to playing video games, to chucking a van across the stage.

The way I could see the friendship gauge working is if you had cards for different characters you’d choose to make a party out of at the start of the game. With that, you could then give each character action an assisted version, which would cost a card or two of another character to activate (and possibly extra SP). When an assisted action is used, you get to add a friendship token to the action taker and the assisting character. If the characters have any stat cards that would stay on the board to represent your selection of them, the friendship token would go onto or next to those cards. Those could would probably also have an ultimate move mentioned on them that would cost an amount of frienship tokens (and maybe also SP?).

  • Sounds great! You’re obviously much better at making rules for card games than I am!

I guess I have a bit of experience in the matter, or at least I’ve read enough board game reviews to get a gist. Also, were you planning for this to be single-player, competitive or something else?

  • I was thinking competitive. Never seen a single player card game.
