I think the darkness is the final form or the first form of the vex, which would explain why they worship it in the garden and why they simulate guardians & their attempt to simulate light. Because they either want to beat themselves before they become the darkness or change the outcome Either way, the darkness means something to the vex, they worshipped it they studied its weakness, they built their world engine simulator to study guardians, plus we still have Quaria resetting the dreaming city
