I think the Motes we collect aren't Light or Dark. From the sound of the lore about them, it sounds like the Mote of Dark is made in the Bank, which has Taken effects on it, where the Motes are compressed to a single Mote of Dark, but the only reason they're Dark is because of the Bank.

I see it as preparation or something more to it... motes of dark , invader to kill other guardians in pve format .. Then Mara Sov said to Nine emissary weapon being put into place is that what the drifter is towing .

I would need to see context and what he said on that, because I have never once heard him refer to the ones we collect as Dark, I have only seen the ones he gets from the Bank labelled as Dark.

They are called Motes of Dark during the Malfeasence quest. Like actually in game theres a part were you have to bank motes and it says "Motes of Dark Banked %."
