To me, Toland is a good guy at the end of the day. To him, it's not as simple as light=good/Darkness=bad.
I think he sees it as, in order to beat the enemies of the darkness, we must embrace some of the ways of the darkness to better understand our enemies. In doing so, you depart from some of the methods of the light.
Toland is a good guy, but he has... unique ways... of guiding us.

Isn’t that what the Drifter believes in?
-
I always thought since finishing vanilla D1 campaign .....they are not telling us everything...
-
as well, he sees the hypocrisy in some of the teachings of the light.
-
Hypocrisy of the light? How's that?
-
We mercilessly kill everything we see. Hell, we killed Mithrax, who might end up being the savior of the eliksni. for all we damn other species for, we revel ourselves. seems a bit... dark, ey?
-
I don't think Mithrax dying is canon though, is it? Weren't we rewarded for not killing him in the game? Anyways... I just don't see the hypocrisy. Humanity is defending itself.
-
His death is canon. Whether it’s from us killing him or not, we aren’t sure. He has died and come back from the light. All I’m saying is, we kill mercilessly and how many of those time could we have not attacked and tried to communicate?
-
Do you think people really haven't tried to communicate with invading forces? How well does it work for you when you try to stand next to a fallen soldier and communicate?
-
well seeing as how I can't die, it'd probably make sense for me to repeatedly die and try and communicate with them instead of giving them their only death
-
You killed mithrax
-
Oh god no I didn’t, but many did
