This Nike controversy is just stupid.

On one side, you have people more butthurt about nike using colon capernacky or whatever his name is, than the fact they use sweatshops in third world countries to manufacture their overpriced crap, paying people like what? 2 dollars a day? Or is it a week? I dont even know anymore. But that kills me, it's not even like their stuff is cheap. So yeah, if you didn't dislike Nike until just now:
hurr durr.
Then, on the other side, you have people who are actually gonna support them and buy into this blatant bullcrap marketing gimmick believe in something. Even if it means outsourcing jobs to third and second world countries to make overhyped clothes and shoes and ship it back here at a crazy high margin. "Hurr durr capitalism is bad" "hurr durr muh corporate greed". But as soon as it goes against trump somehow the left wing socialist zerg mob abandons all it's own principles before you can say "socialism doesnt work". But I have to kind of admire the sheer audacity of Nike to even try, presumably with a straight face, to portray themselves as having a social conscious while running sweatshops. "Hurr durr but eccho, you're just a right winger! You're only saying nike is bad because they support a guy who doesnt like your clementine commander in chief!" Well, glad you brought that up, because here's what Bernie Sanders had to say about nike 20 years ago. They still do the same crap today. https://youtu.be/ARXPVMd_Zwk

  • Yeah, it's pretty much idiots on both sides on this one. Burning or destroying products you already own does nothing to hurt the company you're angry at. Also, if this is the reason you're choosing to boycott Nike I'd recommend evaluating your priorities. Believing a company has a social conscious, especially a company with the track record of Nike, is idiotic. They care zero about social causes and if the person that is just now deciding to support them actually did then they wouldn't, because of Nike's track record with sweat shops. I mean, some of the stories that have come out of them are pretty terrible. Honestly, the entire protest discussion has been garbage since day 1 and neither side of the debate wants to hear the other side or has any interest in moving off whatever position they're taking and yet every time it comes up there they are yelling at each other. It was entertaining for a while, it's just tiresome now.

  • I agree that the entire thing is stupid. On one hand, you have people (a vast minority, btw) burning their gear that they've already given money to Nike for. On the other hand, nothing says "I stand against oppression and injustice" like signing a multi-million dollar contract with a company that basically uses slave labor. I think my favorite part in all of this, however, are the Democratic socialists that are cheering Nike on while at the same time say "-blam!- capitalism" on a regular basis. Let's not forget, too, that Nike has hijacked this "movement" and monetised it for their gain. How righteous of them.

    • I don’t agree with Colin. I don’t care if people burn their Nike’s. Ima continue to buy their shoes because that’s all I’ve bought for the last 20 years because they’re comfortable and don’t fall apart even after 6 months.

    • There a few problems with the so called boycott. One, the people boycotting Nike are burning items they already bought a paid for. Meaning Nike is losing zero.dollars with this protest. Two, the demographic burning said products are clearly not the demographic that Nike is looking to engage and therefore sell products to. Middle aged white guys and disgruntled vet aren't buying $200 shoes and $30 socks. Three, police and armed forces serve the nation to protect Kaperwanker's right to protest as he did along with the so call shoe burning Nike protesters. Both sides of the issue need to realise that part of what comes with the "freedoms" of America is the right to protest even when you don't agree with the otherside even if they and you have a correct and valid points. Maybe what I'm trying to say is that both sides of the issue are in the right. It's okay for people to feel a certain way and not agree with one another. It's prefectly natural. The problem is that people can't grow the -blam!- up and talk out their issues without screaming at each other. Without calling each other some demeaning name. What happened to the time where grown men and woman could sit in a room and figure shit out? What happened to a time when people could put their heads together and find a compromise that is in the best interest of everyone? And damn how good is this medical weed in Michigan?

      • all I got to say is, two American dollars a week is more than most people see in a month, the whole anti sweat shop argument sucks. Sure, they could pay more, or upgrade the shops to make them nicer, but they are giving people a life of the streets and paying them more than they could honestly earn elsewhere in their country. If you ever ask a sweatshop worker how they like their job, they will tell you that they love it.

          • Sweatshops are not always bad. Most are not ideal, but after having studied them in my Business Ethics class in college I learned that while they aren’t the best place to work, many times the alternative is having zero jobs and higher rates of crime as people grow desperate to feed and clothe themselves. That doesn’t excuse companies from treating the people like shit. That should be improved. But knocking companies for simply having sweatshops seems like the wrong approach. Quote on Nike and sweatshops
It may seem like a flashback to the 1990s, when Nike became the poster child for corporate irresponsibility and was regularly targeted by anti-sweatshop activists. Over the next decade and a half, the company made serious efforts to reform its practices, adopting one of the business world’s first codes of conduct and winning praise from labor activists. But in recent months Nike has lost much of that goodwill, amid similar allegations, and is sparking new protests led by a new generation of activists.
Tl;dr-Room for improvement, but the connotation of “sweatshops” seems to derive more backlash than reality, which still sucks but many times is better than nothing.

It is as moronic as the NRA members shooting up their Yeti stuff because Yeti pulled their old discounts and gave them new ones. I do not buy stuff based on its politics, I buy based on quality. I shop at stores and eat at restaurants that have quality service. I could not care any less about the political stance of the place. I want to spend my money some place where I feel valued and I feel like I am getting both a quality experience and quality products for my money.
Then I go shop at Walmart when I am being a lazy -blam!-er, lol.
It’s weird that all these conservatives have suddenly developed a social conscience and started caring about third world wages and working conditions. Especially as almost every piece of clothing people wear these days is made in sweat shops.
