The worst horror games ever made
Outlast:It had promise, it had beautiful graphics, but the promise faded within the first 10 minutes before it became a mindless series of jump scares and Hollywood cliches. Blood and gore do not make good horror if there is no creativity or thought involved.
Amnesia A machine for pigs: Whereas the first Amnesia made me shit my pants with dread and made me want to turn off the game before I took another step, this one decided to tone down the horror by having some of the most ridiculous monsters I’ve seen in a survival horror. Plus the story sucked.
Condemned Criminal origins: great combat, predictable scares.
Silent hill homecoming: This is where silent hill died. It lost the subtle creepy vibe only j-horrors can give you, and went for a more in-your-face beatem up.
5NAF (all of them): A game all about delaying the jumpscare.? No thanks, sounds boring.
The last but not least, F.E.A.R.- Creepy girl with powers cliche? Check. Poorly timed and predictable scares? Check. Dull, bland, and confusing level design? Check. F.E.A.R. contains almost zero originality. What creativity it does show, clashes with the horror. Sure it’s cool to be a soldier who can slow down time, but at the same time, how can I possibly feel threatened when I am...a soldier who slows down time? It boggles my mind when people actually tell me they were scared by this pile of garbage.

I had a phobia of mannequins back when I played it soooooo.. yeah lol. Fck that. Also, I found out my friend really wasn't a fan of bears. Wow. edit - and it was pretty bad as far as story and scare factor go.. but Fear 3 was fun af. Me and the friend who hates bears beat the game co op, playing as the brother with powers was phenomenal.

Oxenfree is a pretty good horror game, with an interesting art style.

I will second Outlast and Condemned: Criminal Origins. These are both highly lackluster games with jump scares that do not scare. I haven't played the others on the list, but none of them have ever been of any interest. Other unplayable horror-related messes that come to mind would include Alien: Isolation, Silent Hill Origins, and Fragile Dreams: Farewell Ruins of the Moon. I would also most likely say that Resident Evil 6 is in that batch somewhere, but I've never really bothered with the game.

8 RepliesAs much as I love Outlast, it did have too many jump scares. Especially in the beginning of the game. It's one of the reasons why the sequel is vastly superior. That said, I still wouldn't call it a bad horror game. A bad horror game is one that fails to invoke fear. Resident Evil 5 and 6 come to mind in that regard. It isn't even a bad game, since the gameplay, visuals and sound are all exceptional.

The fathers of horror games, Resident Evil, Alone in the dark, Silent Hill, the only thing scary about them is how poorly they aged. It's like how people thought Edgar Allen Poe poems were scary, it doesn't make any sense. The best spooky games are games like resident evil 4 and 7. They start a least a little spooky, and then descend into cheesy nonsense.

Outlast is a good horror game. Fear was creepy af when it first came out. Condemned criminal origins was a great game.

I personally love horror games that are more "creepy" than scary, where the game is normal but there is something underneath the surface that is just wrong. Where you could go through an entire game normally, with this distinct feeling that something is just off. Not zombies chasing you, not a crazed killer with a mask or a phantom child. Just an atmosphere that can be ominous or eerie with characters who are... off. Dreaming Mary is a simple example, where everything is cutesy but the dialogue of one particular character is... suggestive yet in the context somewhat fine. The longer the game is played, the more tasks are completed, things start to fall apart. You can go through the entire game without really knowing too much, though such an ending is not exactly good. This game in particular isn't scary, don't get me wrong, but it can be creepy on the first playthrough for those of lesser heart. Same goes for Irisu Syndrome, I find it slightly creepy but unless you're good at the game you won't really see anything scary. And I use "scary" loosely, since it really isn't all that scary.

While I can agree that many of those games make for bad horror games (two of them making for better action/thriller games instead of horror games), I can’t call them the worst horror games.
