Probably the so called Darkness, or at least part of it or a manifestation of sone kind.

My friend saw some lore bout the darkness and he thinks at that the darkness isnt a race of aliens, he thinks that the darkness is a being that can change its shape to anything it desires. I forgot to complete detail he told me, ill check it with him again.
