I haven't read anything else from your story, but this was very good.
Not only does the story itself (that you have started with this post) build intrigue, but it's written a lot better than the stuff that usually gets posted here.

It's not one specific thing. It's just the sort of extract that gets me interested in the world of a story, much like when finding an interesting note in a video game.
