This happened to me as well last week. I was on my hunter and had all available exotics except one (apotheosis veil). It dropped a duplicate i already owned. This week I signed in with warlock and tried again, got the Apotheosis Veil.
So I think, once you get close to having them all. If you are going after a certain piece that is class specific, you must be on that class.

Indeed you must be on that class to get class specific exotics, since the release of Destiny 2 i've never had a titan exotic drop on my hunter; or any other class exotic which it isn't for that specific class.
