It’s so light level matters more in crucible. Also, it will more influence your loadout, more incentive to get higher light.
But I think primarily so light level matters more.

I mean that's pretty obvious. Is that it? I've been playing D2 almost every day since release, so it will "benefit" a player like me, but it just seems so cheap in PvP.

Idk I think it’s primarily to have more meaning in a higher light for PvP I guess. Also Trials is endgame PvP so it makes a little more sense there as well.
